Why this hardon for Roberts?

It is unusual, but not unprecedented, for a president to nominate to the Supreme Court someone with no judicial experience. It is unusual, but not unprecedented, for a president to bring in an outsider to fill the position of Chief Justice rather than promote a sitting Supreme Court judge. I believe it is unprecedented to nominate someone with no judicial experience to the highest seat on the highest court in the nation.

Why? What is it about Roberts that makes Shrub break with tradition in such a drastic way?

experience, or roughly the same amount of time that George has in dusting himself off after bicycle accidents.

... merely because one never really knows what kind of Justice a person will make until they've served on the court for a few years.

With the obvious known quantites of Thomas and Scalia, why would Bush** pick an "unknown" over them?

It doesn't smell right to me.

6. He's young... he could possible head up the Court for another

50 years. And, as we know, most people (not all, but most) get more conservative as they get older. Think of where this guy is starting out, and imagine where he could be in 40-50 years. *shudder*

It is a way that this Presidency will bestow a gift on America that will just keep on giving for decades.

Of the 16 Chief Justices, 11 were directly appointed, only 5 were elevated from within the court.

It was my understanding that Chief Justices were traditionally "brought up through the ranks", with promotions being more common that direct appointments. Thanks for the info.

...is because right now, with the Katrina screwup, chimpy is WEAK.

This could be his only shot at putting a crazy far right asshole on the court, this one has already been partially vetted and the fires of dissent tamped down, and the next pick won't be so easy, because people are mad and they are gonna get madder when they see the price tag in terms of lives and cold hard cash on Katrina.

It's now or never, especially if he cannot get back on top in the court of public opinion.

Finally he performed the ultimate neocon favor - worked with Jeb for the 2000 selection of GWB.

He's more than earned his spot in the limelight.

At this moment, Stevens is the acting CJ. W wants that position filled BEFORE the court session starts so that Stevens will only be an ordinary justice and a conservative will be CJ.

Roberts is the only game in town for him. Thomas would open the Anita Hill think all over again, and Scalia is too old. Scalia will probably have to step down under the next president and he is afraid of a Democrat being the next POTUS.
