DUers, be sure to attend your next local government meetings
what needs to be said at these meetings is obvious.....but let us state it again

"New Orleans could have been our town, what is the plan here in case something like that happens?"

if any, simply any government official, the mayor, city councilperson or county commissioner do not have the answers right then and there, they should be excoriated at that meeting.

with "what the hell do you mean you 'don't know'? were you living in a cave this past month? Is this what we are supposed to expect from you when a disaster visits us, 'you don't know?'"

No politician should be allowed to get away with an answer like that considering what the nation has seen this past week.

if they think that people are not going to attend their next public meeting without having them ask this question they are idiots who need to be turned out at the next election.

go to your next town meeting and find out what the plan is.

3. National Incident Management System (NIMS) link for questions
http://www.fema.gov/nims/

they have "frequently asked questions."

where are the evac routes, are they posted?

how long is it expected for the community to be evacuated or sheltered,

what is the cost of FEMA locally

where are the shelters, medical facilities, water, food,

if we do not put pressure on the local government they won't put pressure on the state or national governments to protect us.

find out what to do.
