NO was a little blue island, swimming in a sea of red.
To what extent do you think the POLITICS that the republicans keep complaining about, were really played in the inadequate federal response to the crisis? New Orleans was a tiny blue speck on the southern map. And now everything (port, industry, etc.) looks like it may be moved up to Baton Rouge. Tell me, is Baton Rouge a republican city? Is that why the levees weren't funded?

1. NO was a truly unique city ...
One that still valued living over commerce, where people may have been quite poor but were quite HAPPY NONETHELESS. New Orleans wasn't following the southern "go-go economic resurgence" plan (a la Atlanta, Houston, etc.) -- it was continuing to go its own way -- and I'm convinced that's why it was neglected. Natives who are doing "eulogies" to the Big Easy are now saying that it was a totally different way of living from much of the rest of this country, and certainly not a way of life that money-grubbing, work-is-everything rightwing Rethugs could appreciate or value. It was politics, but it was social as well.
