NAFTA has ruled in Canada's favour on Softwood lumber many times, as has the WTO... yet, we get fucked

It was a treaty, and was not ratified by a 2/3 majority in the Senate.

The President of China is here on a visit, having serious trade talks and signing deals. Personally, I've been waiting for this moment all my life, ie. diversifying our economy, re-purposing our relationship with the US, etc. We're essentially doing what everybody else in the world is doing in that respect anyway.

Besides, the softwood lumber thing will probably work itself out anyway, once people down south realize it'll be costing them billions extra in illegal tariffs as they're rebuilding the Gulf Coast. (I know, it sounds harsh and opportunistic to speak that way in times like these, but let's face it: Bush can't do anything unless it's RE-ACTING to any given crisis, as he's proved over and over again. It's all he knows how to do. He's such an immature leader/statesman, he doesn't even know what the term proactive means.)

Hell, there were players in the BC lumber industry who were even considering GIVING the Gulf States FREE lumber/plywood/particle board for the rebuilding effort last week, until they found out the US Feds would STILL be charging illegal tariffs - ON A FUCKING GIFT! (Yet another example of them unable to admit they're, in fact, dickheads. Now THAT'S a story which should be getting out there, but the timing is not quite right.)

And you're absolutely correct about NAFTA. Tear it up, and shove up Mulroney's ass. He's the only major signatory left around who's directly responsible. (Reagan's dead, and even if he WAS alive, he wouldn't remember signing it...). Just tear it up; no trade war - it's not even necessary - just shred the fucking thing.

Do you follow the stock market? We have the hottest economy in the western hemisphere. It's showtime...

I can't remember where I read that; possibly in my local newspaper or perhaps in The Globe & Mail.

Regardless, the US should live up to the agreements it signs. I'm personally hoping that our forestry industries will find new markets in Asia & Europe ... screw the US ... let 'em beg for our lumber.

The OFIA proposal, which Lim said will be presented to International Trade Minister Jim Peterson, would see the federal government purchase quantities of Canadian-produced lumber and provide it free to the United States.

The U.S. Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports, the group which has lobbied for tariffs to be imposed against Canadian-produced softwood, said last week the group would agree to drop tariffs on any lumber donated by Canadian producers to the U.S.

Appears to be saying that if the company donates it they would not raise a big fuss. But it also appears that the producer group wants the government to purchase it and provide it.

So seems to be a disconnect.

Plus I find it hard to have the government provide free lumber to some company like Halliburton that will just end up charging a big mark up for it.

The only reason why we came up with NAFTA involved certain CEO's desire to make OMG ALL UR $$$$ BELONG TO US.

(Oh, on a lighter note, I worked plenty of overtime this summer, which means I get to go to a bunch of hockey games:evilgrin:)

NAFTA and CAFTA are both bad deals for countries that are not third world. The US, unlike Europe, put together trading blocs with poor countries and said - don't worry, we'll come down to your level. Europse on the other hand said: If you want to trade with us, bring up your levels of environmental protection, wages, etc. It's just us ugly Americans doing our thing again. You ought to know by now not to trust us.
