Squishy Republicans OOZING towards Democrats
I won't bore you with a "Freeper Converted" story because, honestly, I don't know any freepers or zealot wingnuts. But, as a former RINO, I know many independently minded Republicans. Based on recent interactions at various events, I believe W has forever lost the moderate/liberal Republicans...no matter how many photo-ops he takes now. Check out these poll numbers:

From RealClearPolitics:
Bush Approval
RCP Average 9/6 - 9/11 (averages all recent polls, even Fox and Gallup and STILL get this average)
Approve = 41.9%
Disapprove = 53.9%
Spread = -12.0%

Newsweek Poll Sept. 8-9, 2005. N=901 registered voters nationwide. MoE ± 4. .

"To begin, suppose the elections for U.S. CONGRESS were being held TODAY. Would you vote for the Republican Party's candidate or the Democratic Party's candidate for Congress in your district?" If other/unsure: "As of TODAY, do you LEAN more toward the Republican or the Democrat?" Options rotated

Republicans - 38%
Democrats - 50%
Other/Unsure - 12%

Ah, yes, the squishy Republicans who refuse to lock-step march to the RW talking points dictated out of this administration. Those pesky RINO/"Rockefeller Republican" types are abandoning the theocratic-neocon agenda in ever increasing numbers. You see, unfortunately for W and his bunch, these are cynical voters at the start. They believe there's a certain level of corruption as a "given" in politics but they are now in tune to and angered by the huge, no-bid contracts given to B/C cronies, not just in Iraq, but now in New Orleans. Oh, and the oil company record profits, more of the B/C "gang". And the final straw, the total lack of leadership and response to the devastation brought to the Gulf by Katrina...and the smoke and mirrors of Homeland Security costing billions in taxpayer dollars.

They are gone. Cannot be won back. The question is: Can the Democrats capitalize by showing true leadership and vision? C'mon Dems, you could drive a Mack truck through this opening...RUN WITH IT!

1. It's that last bit that's a problem...
Democrats need to capitalize on Republican failures. Come out with a plan to restructure FEMA, along with demands for minimum qualifications for all FEMA's officers, and so on. And that's just the beginning.
We need to both criticize Republicans AND provide viable alternatives.

5. This is their "Monica Moment"
First off: I know the scale of things make the comparison seem trivial.

I think a lot of us had that moment of disappointment when we found out Clinton lied about the BJ. For me, it lasted a few few moments where I thought "That was stupid" and then shrugged since it seemed there were far more important things to worry about.

Now many Bush supporters are having their moment of realization. But the consequences are far, FAR, FAR, more severe. They are seeing for themselves that the stories about his shallowness and detachment have been true all along. And those who knew he was an empty suit and thought it did not matter since there were "Adults in charge" are also getting an education.

6. Honestly, I think it started before this and has been cumulative...
The Schiavo intrusion was a real eye-opener for the RINO's who STILL didn't see the power of the Rapturist Right.

Iraq has been a slow, grinding, no-end-in-sight quagmire with no exit strategy revealed...because this admin. has no exit strategy.

Gas prices have taken a bit of a toll out of most people's disposable income allowance.

And, finally, for ALL TO SEE, the real W & Co. in the Katrina disaster. All that talk about making us safer and the billions spent were revealed to be little more than pork spending and cronyism.
