CNN said the exit polls were really close. And that must be what the judged by. Because there are only 30% of the official #'s. But they won't show the exit polls. So what the fuck happened?

And Iowa and New Hampshire are not exactly representative, either.

31. Kerry is just not the right one ... I'm afraid
That is my opinion. Kerry has no arguments that can hold any water. He has supported Bush in everything that he has done as president or kept silent. He is not in a position to fight him on a political front. All Bush has to say is "You supported me then, why not now".

This is what the White House wants and they will get it. We were silly to think that they would wait until November to take the White House. They will control who the democratic contender is and make sure it is someone who they can beat or who will roll over when told to.

I know this is harsh. I believe there are republicans who have switched parties to vote in the primaries to help make this happen. They will be republicans again come November. These are my sentiments even if I sound paranoid.

33. All the talk about "electability,"
and that many people go for Kerry. No it doesn't make any sense. He's a sitting duck for GOP attacks, with more baggage than a wealthy family on its way for a summer in the Catskills. What's more, he's gone butt ugly on Dean and Clark with sneaky crap. But most people don't pay close enough attention to even know the sleaze behind the Kerry camaign.

Dean has worked his ass off, and he will continue to do so. Thanks goodness for his example, or I might just give up out of exasperation. I could live with losses to Clark or even Edwards, but Kerry is a step backward for the party.

Ponder this: why did Kennedy, a Dem. Senator from Mass. vote NO on the IRW? What did he know that his good friend and Dem Senator, from Mass ....running for president... didn't?

67. I agree
what's with this Kerry surge?!

After this past weekend's C-SPAN coverage of the stump speeches and assorted appearances by all, there is no way Kerry inspires or motivates like Dean (or Edwards or Clark). Iowa could not have given him that much of a boost and I can't believe the media talked free spirited NH folks into doing their bidding.

I cannot see Kerry winning the GE and that is the ultimate goal EVERY Dem voter in every primary should focus on. Just this past weekend on C-SPAN call-in segments I even heard repugs say they were ABB (must be reading some of our sites) and of the pack, preferred Dean. Some I know here in SC are Dean and Clark supporters but I have yet to meet a repug who will kick Bush to the curb for Kerry. Kerry is scary.

Well, ya'll, there's always the SC primary to stall this train.

But I don't see the logic behind the "thought." When do "safe choices" actually win the White House, at least for Democrats? Mondale was a "safe choice." Same with Dukakis and Gore. Carter and Clinton were not.

Which elections did we win? I wish people would look at history.

Good luck to you and the Kerry crew as well next week. I really want to see this turn into more of a horse race no matter what two are on top. I want to see the winner win by 1-3 % in one of these primaries which will be good news but it won't help get the candidates towards that elusive delegate count

If he had won Iowa and placed second in NH, it would be a bloodbath. Here, HD came in ahead of rising-star Edwards to take fully a quarter of the Dem votes in a field of 7 contestants. He has the money, he has the organization AND he beat back the full-out assault by the media to bury him this past week.

BTW - can you believe what has happened in a week? From "crazy Dean" to a strong second place. As soon as the field narrows the real race will begin.

I'm a happy camper tonight.

42. WTF IS GOIN ON!
Edited on Tue Jan-27-04 08:48 PM by DinoBoy
Seriously, Iowa polls showed the race close, and Kerry and Edwards come out of nowhere and slaughter Dean.

NH polls showed Kerry ahead 7 percent MAXIMUM and it looks like he's ahead by 15+ percent.

All the networks seemed to have NH exit polls within MOE.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THE DISCONNECT HERE!?

Polling, and VNS polling used to be accurate within 1/2 of a percent.

There is something massively wrong going on here, and I think it concerns EVERYONE and not just Deanies.

54. 1/2 a percent!?
Edited on Tue Jan-27-04 09:05 PM by pmbryant
Polling, both tracking and exit, has never been anywhere close to that accurate.

Even the statistical errors in typical polls are 3-4%, which means the expected statistical error on the difference between candidates is 5-6%. And that doesn't even count sampling bias, which can really throw things off wildly.

There is no reason to be suspicious.

EDIT: Dean had a very solid 2nd place showing. Nothing to be ashamed about at all, given that it looked for a while that he could have been down in the <15% range a few days ago.

EDIT AGAIN: I should also add that the fact that all the exit polls were wrong in the same way only means that their sampling biases were the same. This is also not surprising.

60. 1/2% was an exageration Pete :-)
But there IS a HUGE discrepancy between pre-election and exit polls, and the actual numbers. No polls conducted by anyone showed Kerry winning with ~40% and Dean losing by ~15%.

It IS something to take note of, and IS something to potentially worry about. I'm not saying that anything suspicious happened, just that it's one possibility, and the only reason I bring it up is that polls have historically been pretty accurate, and the polls tonight are MASSIVELY incorrect.

Edited on Tue Jan-27-04 09:18 PM by pmbryant
See this post from Calpundit averaging all the final tracking polls together http://www.calpundit.com/archives/003132.html

Kerry: 35%
Dean: 22%
Clark: 13%
Edwards: 12%
Lieberman: 8%

The latest results I see show Kerry at 39% and Dean at 25%, so it seems the tracking polls actually were pretty good on this one.

135. Candidate's supporters should attempt to do their own exit polling
as a back-up source. That way if there are some discrepancies there is some solid evidence to back it up.

So ya, something's gone amiss, and it is something that's pretty damn weird, plus the exit-polling porblem is still there.....

Weird

153. That's an average of all the tracking polls, not just Zogby
So there must be several besides Zogby in there, yet the final tracking poll results were pretty much right in line with the voting results.

Nothing amiss.

Exit polling did seem to overestimate Dean's results and underestimate Kerry's, but only by a few points, and thus well within the margin of error.

Nothing amiss.

:-)

49. I'll campaign "Heart and Soul" for the one-and-only Howard Dean!
With Dean winning the nomination, I will get out there and knock on doors and wear out all my walking shoes, spreading the message that there is hope for this country, that we are not lost, that Howard Dean is the one who can turn it all around, and restore to the citizens of this country the respect and admiration which we need in this world to accomplish great things. Howard Dean has heart, Howard Dean is genuine, and no other contender has such a fiery, passionate soul.

If it's Kerry who eventually gets the nod, then I'll campaign on the basis of anti-bush, but not pro-Kerry. Sorry. He reminds me of Lurch, and there is something so plastic about him.

59. Question about delegates
This is an honest question: If Dean hasn't come in first in either Iowa or NH, why does he lead in number of delegates (according to cnn.com)? What does this mean in terms of his chances at getting the nomination?

66. Superdelegates; not much.
Not all delegates are elected; some, like congressmen, people like Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, Terry Mac., etc. get automated spots. They can vote for whoever they want to; the tradition is to vote w/the majority of the popular vote. So this only matters if it's really close going in convention, and if those delegates -really- support Dean, and didn't just jump on the bandwagon.

Kerry leads in commited delegates, of course. Not sure how Dean vs. Edwards is in total. For NH only, Kerry seems to be gettign 14, Dean 8.

104. Echoes of Dean
I was in bed the other day, listening to the radio before I got up, and I heard an excerpt from a JFK speech. It was astonishing to hear the words, ideas, the passions of HD coming from JFK's mouth. That told me that the campaign was Dean's campaign ... the only question was who would be Dean ... Dean, or someone else.

The contact point for the Dean ideas is ... Dean. Who could present them better?

131. Dean is sooooo still in this race
I know you know this already, but don't listen to the pundits. They only know what their earpieces feed them. I really wonder when was the last time they had an independent thought.

I'm very impressed by Dean and all his supporters.

Next Tuesday is literally anybody's race. But I feel that Clark, Dean and Edwards will split the states. So until then...thanks for bringing Dean to the attention of the nation. I don't always agree with him but he does bring something unique to the race and the Party.

Good thoughts to all. See you all next Tuesday.

Go Wes. Go Dean.

137. 9 delegates !?
Folks, if you haven't noticed yet, CNN, AP are projecting 9 delegates and not 8 out of NH for Dean now... Woo-hoo ;-)

but I am also wondering where the exit polls went wrong. Dean is the comeback kid this year and is well positioned to take advantage of this. Things could be better but I am happy.

144. Good effort Dean campaign
Good luck the rest of the way. Those of us who don't want the country to continue down this road of late respect the Dean campaign for helping give us all energy to fight for the people.

145. Another Dean Fan Here
I must admit, I'm not doing backflips of ecstasy about Dean's second-place finish, depite all the talk about "comeback" and "turnaround" ... because in my fondest fantasies I was hoping for a conclusive win (and with Clark a solid second ... and, for icing on the cake, a better showing for Kucinich). At the same time, I'm not crushed either, because I was expecing this outcome. And as lots of others have said, there's a long way to go!

I'm sure Kerry's a fine guy, but he just doesn't do anything for me. I can muster some positive feelings for him since he seems to have a good pro-environmental record, but truthfully he's a blank to me. I love Dr. Dean's passion, his willingness to speak out and tell it like it is. Here's hoping the upswing continues, and I look forward to voting for him!

146. Dean all the way ,started out him
and will go the end with him. Democrats better hope that he stays in by some chance if he doesn't win for a while longer because the fire he and supporters brought could go out. Kerry couldn't keep his own fire lit and it was almost extinguished if you believe the media so truly he was not the one to get the Dems fired up. And remember this fire has to last till election in November because it doesn't matter who gets he nomination if the voters aren't fired up to go to the polls to vote then all for naught.

B4 the CA primary - Dean is going 2 take CA. His grassroots here is top-notch. I volunteered in New Mexico over MLK weekend. Saw 2 Kucinich yard signs and 1 Clark. People seem to know who Dean is and like what he says. Dean is gonna sweep the Southwest & West!

150. YAHOOOOOOO!!!
We knew Kerry was gonna win NH...we knew that. But we came in second and no one else even close to the top two, so it seems we did pretty good out there in NH, and we are back alive!!

We need Dr. Dean, to perform a Bushectomy in November!!

I'm thrilled we got second place!!

Now, on to SC.

Any predictions?

I'm thinking Edwards will do there, the whole "native son" vote thing...and Sharpton ought to pick up some delegates in SC, with the heavy African-American vote anticipated.

I'm thinking Edwards, Clark, Dean, Kerry, Sharpton as our top five, in that order. Any other predictions? I think Clark will move up to the 2-spot in SC just because he is also from the South. But it will be a very close race among the top four, with Sharpton taking what's left. And it'll be enough to get him some delegates, I daresay.

BTW, I think Lieberman will wise up and drop, as will Kucinich after SC. sharpton might even drop too, but I expect he might hang in there a bit longer, hoping to pick up a few more delegates in a few other states, before dropping.

By Super Tuesday, we will probably be down to four candidates, if that...and they will be DEAN, Clark, Kerry, and Edwards.

Personally, me, I'm still rooting for a Dean/Edwards ticket or a Dean/Clark ticket. Either would be pretty tough for Chimpy to beat in November!

152. We love you Howard
I can't understand how Kerry is doing so well, my thought is that the republican's might be crossing over to vote for Kerry because he is the most like them. While he is still a vast improvement over the trash living in our White House he is no Howard Dean.

Dean is responsible for rallying the troops and getting the Dems to realize that we can win in 2004.
