What exactly does the Democratic Party Stand For?
If you nominate someone like Kerry who has the same military agenda as Cheney/Rumsfield??? The Democratic Party has failed me and my fellow soldiers and I'm beyond heartbroken. . .I'm despairing for the future of my country. You won't see me at DU anymore.

1. Kerry does not have a military agenda.
You've made an error of fact.

8. The "War Resolution?" That is a right-wing misnomer-
Edited on Tue Jan-27-04 08:58 PM by Redleg
an example of how the right has framed the resolution as either a vote for war or a vote against it. The resolution was more correctly to be viewed as a "put pressure on Iraq" resolution. Many of the Dems who voted for the resolution wanted to put pressure on Iraq to allow inspectors to return to check things out. War was meant to be a last resort- the threat of military reprisal was meant to signal that we meant business. Only Bush and his right-wing junta wanted to go to war (okay, maybe Joe Lieberman too).

Edited on Tue Jan-27-04 08:58 PM by Redleg
"Framing" happens to be a relevant cognitive process that describes the way issues and arguments are presented so as to manage other's perceptions of the issue.

On edit- okay, maybe you weren't being facetious. I apologize if I offended you by suggesting that.

19. No way dude.
I did a huge thread last week to figure out the hot button "framing" words and phrases. Very lively discussion. I got your point and totally agree with you.

10. IWR gave the executive branch disarmament leverage.
The inspectors were not in Iraq in October 2002.

12. Exactly.
Of course not everyone here at DU will agree with that. That's fine- we liberals don't have a problem with constructive discourse.

7. Here's what the Democratic Party is to me:
The Democratic Party stands for nuanced and pragmatic positions, not ideology. We're not ivory tower, we just do what works to help people out, get them jobs, education, etc. We don't promise them irresponsible tax cuts in the hopes that they'll vote for us, and we don't run up huge deficits. We don't use race or sexuality to divide, and we don't pander to the ultra-conservative Christian right.

I think there's a dupe, where I also posted, but this one seems to be getting the responses.

exceptions to the rule and sometimes we use bad judgement. But as a general rule Dems are good people

25. Which Democratic Party?
There's a Democratic Party that stands for its sources of funding and their interests, and there's a Democratic Party that stands for social justice and related ideas.

If you're heartbroken only now, you haven't been paying attention.

27. Interesting
i've heard some say that the US deserves what they get and it is going to be a world of hurt. I do not know whether the battle cry of ABB will be enough to demand allegiance from those who see Kerry as selling out to Bush on most everything that mattered in the past 3 years. It really compromises Kerry's ability to challenge Bush---yeah, that really makes him so much more electible.

29. Also exit polls
showed most primary voters considered healthcare as their biggest concern. I know this IS important, but more so than our teetering economy and the regime's insane foreign policy. I guess I really am out of the mainstream cause I'm not getting it at all.
