GOP lawmaker on SS reform: 'It's Over'
RAW STORY

Roll Call reports today that Republican lawmakers are considering abandonment of the Social Security reforms that were to be the cornerstone of Bush's second-term agenda. The story, by Ben Pershing and Emily Pierce, quotes "one Senior Republican lawmaker," as saying flatly, "It's over." Excerpts follow:

Fearful that tackling Social Security reform could cripple his party in the 2006 elections, National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Reynolds (N.Y.) plans to recommend to his fellow leaders that they shelve the issue for the remainder of the 109th Congress.

"Reynolds told Thomas that he would recommend to the leaders that we not proceed with Social Security this year because it did not appear there was any chance it would be passed into law by the Senate, and we'd be forcing our vulnerables to walk to the plank for nothing," said a source familiar with Reynolds' comments.

While Reynolds made reference only to not doing Social Security this year, the source said it was widely understood that "if it doesn't happen now, it's not happening in 2007."

2. I think this is pretty obvious.
That would shatter their low approval, bringing it to all-time lows, especially while so many are so in need. This is a time when people want government to do more, not less.

They know that people don't like anybody messing with their SS check. They also know that this would have been hammered in '06 by Democratic Candidates.

4. Social Security "reform"?
Oh, they're referring to the gutting of Social Security. I sometimes forget that "reform" means "destruction" in Republicanspeak.

So they're going to put off destroying Social Security until after the 2006 mid-term elections? That's good but it doesn't give me a lot of comfort, since I have to work quite a few more years after that before I can even think about retiring.

bush thought they said DEFORM the government and he's succeeded quite well in doing that.

Look at how President Potty Stop rooked us on his "taking responsibility." The very same day, he tells Congress that his powers during a disaster ought to be EXPANDED! SS "reform" won't be over until they raise the salary cap and/or reduce the tax cuts.

Didn't President Potty Stop attend a fake townhall meeting to "talk" about SS during the vacation? I suppose he won't have to attend any more of these staged events.

bush has to spend. Remember that crushing defeat and that overwhelming mandate to push the republican agenda? Where did all that go?
See, Republicans! That's what you get when you run a sock-puppet for office, then cheat and win. The only bad thing is that we're ALL paying for it, not just you. I hope that's remedied starting November, '06.
