My mom thinks Bush isn't doing ENOUGH damage in Iraq!

So this was interesting. I was talking to my mom today about Bush. After having voted for him in 2004, she's starting to sour on him a bit, but not for the reasons you think.

First, she thinks that all "easterners" should leave the country. Hence, the US needs to close off its borders to "these people" and Bush HASN'T discussed this issue.

Second, Bush hasn't done enough damage in Iraq. He hasn't flattened the place and left it because of the "evil religion" that's over there.

Therefore, she is souring on Bush because he's "wishy-washy" and isn't standing tough ENOUGH.

Now... how exactly do I characterize something like this? :wow:

My mom suffers from NPD. As far as she's concerned, Arabs are mere objects that can be cleared away when they become inconvenient. :(

I grew up with her and dealt with her disorder in a very real way. And yet her inability to feel as exemplified by comments like the above always amaze me.

Kidding aside, I'm sorry about your mom, Writer. Some people just seem to have a down deep need to believe this stuff. A lot of older people are still like that about the Japanese because of their Pearl Harbor memories.

I have been pondering this theory that they have the same disorder as Bush, and therefore, somewhat like and agree with his narcissism. You know, self-affirming themselves through this "moral" "Christian" leader.

Bah... or maybe they're just lemmings... who knows?

Obviously this is not an option for everyone, and many people love their RW relatives in spite of their sickness, but if my family held such beliefs (and they do!), I could no longer associate with them (and I don't!), no more than if they were supporting Nazis during WWII.

But again, I understand this is not possible for some. It's just where I stand.

The role of the "other" impacts her strongly. She must alienate and ostracize the "other" so she can keep her life simpler and easier to negotiate.

While Fareed Zakaria does write about "the dangers of democracy" what he apparently argues is that giving countries like Iraq "too much democracy at once" empowers the mullahs and will lead to the country being overrun by religious fundies. Sounds pretty accurate, though sad, to me. Of course it assumes that we have the right to decide for them ...
