Idea: Laura Bush and the National Book Festival in DC this weekend
The First Lady wants donations and hopes to send five million books to help restock libraries in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. I think DU members in the DC area should help her.

If the DUers in Washington for the pro-peace rally walk two blocks to the Metro station and hit the bookstore there we can donate numerous books to the cause. Authors like Orwell and Lakoff; Al Gore, Wes Clark and Al Franken; for thoughtful humor throw in Michael Moore and Jon Stewart. I'm sure other people can suggest their favorite authors as well.

You just know the freepers are going to fill the bins with Hannity, Rush, Coulter and O'Reilly. We should counter them. Maybe if we put good books in front of them the people in those states will open their eyes and start supporting progressive candidates...

One can hope...

1. Oh The Priorities
A family sits in a shelter somewhere...no home to go to..no job to go to...family roots are severed...unsure of the future..living one day at a time but by golly they kneew that the "family" in the White House has their interest at heart. They will have books to go back home to once they get that job...that home...

We should instead rally against Laura Bush and the Library of Congress collecting books for libraries. That'll look good on CSPAN. :eyes:

There are many steps that have to be taken to get people back to living "normal" lives again. Granted, this isn't the highest priority, but considering it is a BOOK festival, it is appropriate to collect books. If people want to help with the more immediate needs there are multiple outlets to do so: Red Cross, Salvation Army, Good Shepherd Food Bank etc. Also, if you are stuck in a shelter with nothing to do, would you rather do nothing, or read a book?

There are so many reasons to criticize the president and his administration. Collecting books isn't one of them (especially when so many of his followers would rather be burning them).
