Have we had a go at Ed Koch?

Cindy Sheehan's Shameful Rhetoric
Edward I. Koch
Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005

Cindy Sheehan, whose son Casey was killed in action in Iraq on April 4, 2004, has become the face of the anti-war movement in the United States. While her grief is understandable, her rhetoric is outrageous. As the mother of a son killed in battle in Iraq, she originally struck a sympathetic chord, whether you supported the war in Iraq or opposed it. One cannot help but empathize with the agony of a bereaved mother. But that has changed over the months, and I believe that many Americans who viewed her with sympathy no longer do so.

Many Americans, myself included, now see her as a person who has come to enjoy the celebratory status accorded to her by the radicals on the extreme left who see America as the outlaw of the world. These radicals are not content to be constructive critics. They are bent on destroying this country.

Some of them want to turn America into a radical socialist state. Others hope to create a utopia. But regardless of their agendas, how can Cindy Sheehan's supporters defend her shameful statement, "This country is not worth dying for."

..............<snip>

Edward I. Koch, author, lawyer and talk radio host, was a member of the U.S. Congress and, for 12 years, the 105th mayor of New York City.....a Democrat.

The rest of the editorial is just dreadful. If we haven't done so, I'd love to see this deconstructed here.

1. Did Cindy say this:
"This country is not worth dying for."

If she did, can we see the context, explanation, etc?

I hate Koch, and it would not surprise me if he is "mis-speaking" about this alleged Cindy comment.

5. "This country" refers to IRAQ, not America.
I don't have the original quote handy, but the context was Cindy referring to Casey's death, and that Iraq, and especially Bush/PNAC's ever rotating excuses for invading the country, were not worth dying for.

Every right wing pundit/media whore/shill has taken the quote entirely out of context since, and it's no surprise that the traitorous Koch has once again jumped on the PNAC bandwagon.

6. "This country" in her statement was referring to Iraq.
The rightwingers have been twisting it. Ed Koch is a creep.

7. OK, good. I need a link that documents this.
I want to e-mail Newsmax and blast the traitor Koch.

Anybody know where I can look for this documentation?

8. Here's a transcript (although I don't know if this is her first mention of
the phrase):

http://www.discoverthenetwork.org/Articles/Stewartrally.htm

I take responsibility partly for my son’s death, too. I was raised in a country by a public school system that taught us that America was good, that America was just. America has been killing people, like my sister over here says, since we first stepped on this continent, we have been responsible for death and destruction. I passed on that bullshit to my son and my son enlisted. I’m going all over the country telling moms: “This country is not worth dying for. If we’re attacked, we would all go out. We’d all take whatever we had. I’d take my rolling pin and I’d beat the attackers over the head with it. But we were not attacked by Iraq. {applause} We might not even have been attacked by Osama bin Laden if {applause}. 9/11 was their Pearl Harbor to get their neo-con agenda through and, if I would have known that before my son was killed, I would have taken him to Canada. I would never have let him go and try and defend this morally repugnant system we have. The people are good, the system is morally repugnant.

(on edit) The full text could be interpreted by enemies of Cindy that she was talking about the US, not Iraq.

Do you happen to know if Cindy herself has condemned the Fox assertion? I vaguely recall that she did.

I have no idea what her response has been, or if she's expressed one.

11. What is funny is when Republicans try to claim he is a "real" democrat...
and it's the Democratic party that shifted to the left.

12. Some claim Zell's a "Real Democrat" as well.
How they keep a straight face when doing so, I'll never know.

13. Interesting you should mention him.
When responding to someone who claimed Koch was still a democrat I answered, "Yeah, he's as much a democrat as Zell Miller." And the person tried to argue old Zig Zag was a democrat. Bwah!

14. Be sure to remind whoever-it-was that this "Democrat" deserted
Joementum while he was still seeking the Presidential nomination.

This isn't repeated nearly often enough. Every Reep's favorite Dem Senator, Joe Lieberman, was running for President when Zell declared his undying love for Bush's re-election.

Had Zell held off endorsing Bush until AFTER Joe had dropped out, I could almost see someone claiming that Zell was still a Dem. But not when the most pro-war dem was still in the running.
