As CIA leak probe passes Rove, Cheney is eyed, lawyer says
Excerpted to highlight Cheney's role from an article Saturday in the New York Times. The Times' reporters remark: "Ms. Miller's grand jury appearance increased anxiety in the White House and throughout Republican circles about how the investigation might end."

A lawyer who knows Mr. Libby's account said the administration efforts to limit the damage from Mr. Wilson's criticism extended as high as Mr. Cheney. This lawyer and others who spoke about the case asked that they not be identified because of grand jury secrecy rules.

On July 12, 2003, four days after his initial conversation with Ms. Miller, Mr. Libby consulted with Mr. Cheney about how to handle inquiries from journalists about the vice president's role in sending Mr. Wilson to Africa in early 2002 to investigate reports that Iraq was trying acquire nuclear material there for its weapons program, the person said.

In that account, Mr. Cheney told Mr. Libby to direct reporters to a statement released the previous day by George J. Tenet, director of central intelligence. His statement said Mr. Wilson had been sent on the mission by C.I.A. counter-proliferation officers "on their own initiative."

2. Well, that's an obvious plant to clear Cheney.
If all Cheney did was direct reporters to a public statement previously made by Tenet, I don't see how this pulls him into the mire. It will take more than that, I'm afraid.

I'm also pretty sure that there's a lot more to it than that too.

4. Cheney had the most to lose
Cheney was told there was nothing to the Niger/uranium story yet he pushed for more information. Obviously, Cheney wanted something other than the truth.

5. Cheney did not send Joe Wilson.
He had no idea who would be sent. When it turned out to be Wilson and his report didn't bolster what Cheney wanted to hear, the attack on Wilson began. Also, V. Plame's covert Op was getting close to uncovering Cheney's role in selling WMD parts to the enemies of the US while he was CEO of Haliburton. That was the main thrust of her outing.

8. They key is that Cheney knew what Wilson found out in Niger
and he hid it in the run-up to war. Cheney knew the claim that Iraq was trying to get uranium from Niger was false. The whole outing was done to cover this guilty knowledge. Cheney claims he never saw Wilson's report or knew about it, which is a lie.

This whole thing played out in the summer that the "16 words" in the SOTU was causing Bushco problems. They were desperately trying to cover up that they went to war based on lies. Cheney knew the Iraq/Niger/uranium claim was a lie, and he was caught. So they outed Wilson's wife and made Tenet fall on his sword in a desperate attempt to protect Cheney.

7. Fitz is Playing Rove's Camp Vs. Cheney's Camp
He might end up w/ both of them. It's a masterful play methinks.
