in Texas! Moved out west for awhile. I don't even talk like that for gawed's sake. People tell me all the time that I don't have an accent. Get that man a speech therapist. Any kind of therapist. And a white coat to match his white hat. Pretend cowboy. I KNOW a cowboy when I see one. And he ain't it.

6. Me, too! I keep telling my yankee friends he's a fake
I know a Texas accent when I hear it. Hell, I was born and lived their 18 years when I went East to college and never came back to live. My family was put off. As you know, you're not supposed to leave Texas if you were born there (as kids some Texans even think you arent' allowed to leave!).

I don't know why it irritates the hell out of me when he talks that way, it just does. I swear I was so mad that he came prancing up here to collct that honorary degree from Yale. It pisses me off that he won't even admit he was born in New Haven, where I live. One local Repuke legislator wanted to rename RT 34 here in his name. It absolutely enraged me. Mercifully, nothing more was said about it.

Rant finished. Thank you.

34. he gave the Connecticut governor a drop-dead glare ...
... during one of his infrequent visits, when he was introduced as being FROM there.

Two actors who've portrayed Bush on TV (Timothy Bottoms and Brent Mendenhall) have claimed that they didn't need to use their regional accent training to imitate him -- just slur their words ("a mouthful of marbles", according to Mendenhall).

A colleague of mine, who did earn a Yale doctorate, is furious whenever she sees Bush at a convocation, prancing about in that ill-gotten blue gown.

38. Tommy Lee Jones, Anne Richards, Molly Ivins all talk like Texans.
Oddly enough, they Are Texans! And there are of course all kinds of other real Texans with a variety of authentic accents. But I can't even begin to figure out exactly what accent the Cowboy from Connecticut is trying to do. He sounds like a fifth rate actor doing an all purpose "Southern." It makes me foam at the mouth.

Grew up in the reddest part of Texas (the Panhandle) and also recognize Texas talk when I hear it. My sister heard him pronounce the a in rather "ah" as in r-ah-ther. He must be the only West Texan - or East Texan or South Texan for that matter - to say r-ah-ther. Sounds more like New England to me. Silver spoon New England at that.

Then they went back to Midland. Young George had not been told that his sister was so sick.

11. When I was in the Army, I was stationed, for a time at Ft Polk...
LA. I found that the women there, generally, spoke with a pleasant Southern dialect, but the men were more harsh in their distinct way of speaking. As I grew accustomed to the area, I picked up a little of the 'accent'. I never tried to force it, but I was good at picking up accents from being a NY'er. We had so many, it was easy to duplicate them...:)

In any case, bush is trying to be something he is not...like a success... His entire life is built on illusion and the idea that if he 'believes' he is a Texan, he is one. He is no more a Texan than I am. He is a jerk, something I am not, btw. His perceptions of life are so distorted, he feels he has to 'belong' somewhere, TX is as good as anywhere...if he were in New England, his idiotic 'accent magnet' would pick up the distinct regional accent of same Maine.

He is a phony, and the whole "Texan" thing is a ploy for him to appear 'tough'...something he definitely is not.

You have no idea of the awakening power of driving behind a hog carrier hooked to a semi...pigs crapping all over the place while on the road, and if you can't pass the carrier, you wish you could just rip out your olfactory senses.

He had an upper-crust British accent, and had indeed gotten a college degree there ... he tried to imply that he'd lived there as a kid, but after being pressed by the real British expatriates, he had to admit that he was born and raised in a suburb of Toronto!

And when he was upset, his real accent (Scarborough) would come out.

explains this accent drift as well as many of his verbal miscues and his grammatical catastrophes.

That might also explain the quirky smirks, the bug-eyed glares and goofy grimaces, his words and facial expressions so out of sync that you glance involuntarily for possible subtitles to go along with this bad movie in TV. I also really hate watching his sweaty little lip gyrations when the stress really is getting to him, the tiny mouth working this way and that as if it were trying to remove the cap from a bottle.

I bet this accent gets thinker with a good bourbon marinade of the Smirk's scarred frontal lobes of his already diminutive brain.

it was extremely thick this morning. He doesn't speak that way during his state of the union speeches. As someone who has lived in both Louisiana and Texas, I can honestly say that the southern draw is easy to imitate and pick up, however, I can spot someone who is faking it too.

Alicia Silverstone in the movie, Beauty Shop had a southern draw and it drove me nuts to listen to her. Some people should NOT try to emulate a southern draw. It just makes the "southerner's are stupid" remarks easier by those who don't live in the south.

Bush is one who should try very hard to stop talking like John Wayne. It just makes him look like a moron even more.

Yep, Brando's accent was cringe-inducing. Of course, I could say the same thing about Liz Taylor when she's tried to wrap her tongue around a Southern accent.

Most recently, Russell Crowe is an example of someone who mangled an accent ("A Beautiful Mind"). Apparently Mr. Crowe thinks that folks from West Virginia speak like they're from antebellum Mississippi. Contrary to popular opinion, Appalachian accents and Southern accents are not one in the same; fact is, in some ways they are quite the opposite of one another. One of the few actors who pulled off a true Appalachian accent, IMHO, was Sissy Spacek in "Coal Miner's Daughter". She has a good ear and, interestingly enough, hails from Texas. SHE knew the difference!

54. That one doesn't matter.
Don't get me wrong. I have no use whatsoever for Kevin Costner, but don't waste energy complaining about his accent in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. The English language as we know it today DID NOT EXIST in that time period. Therefore, if you wanted to be authentic, the entire cast would have had to be speaking early Middle English, and even then we would be guessing as to how accurate the pronunciation was. Therefore, you cannot say that the classically trained Alan Rickman, with his beautiful voice and British accent, is more correct than dull old Costner. No one's linguistically correct in that movie!

And now back to our regularly scheduled program. :-)

Oh dear lord, I forgot about that. Julia's West Cork via Georgia via Los Angeles travesty really mucked up an otherwise good movie.

Then again, if someone wanted to be a stickler, Neeson's from Belfast, and Collins was from Cork. I have a number of relatives with the Cork accent, but it's been a while since I wathced the movie, and I don't remember if Neeson used it or not.

42. His personality is contrived
because he is an empty narcissitic shell.
He has sort of "made himself up." When he gets stressed he retreats into it the shell and gets flambouyant with the image he has created. It's like protection. He's pretending to be a person, becuse the real guy is empty.
I suspect he is doing this because his reaction to Katrina was so inappropriate. There was no immediate "what am I going to do to make sure those people survive?" response.
He has been alerted to how insensitive it was, and now he is doing his regular guy routine to try to convince the world and maybe even himself that he does have feelings.

44. Fake Texan. Fake pResident. Fake WMDs. Fake SS "crisis." ALL FAKE!
**Everything** about this administration is fake: fake turkey, fake cowboy, fake concern over the Iraqi people, fake concern for the American people, fake photo-ops, etc., etc.

"No Child Left Behind" - all children neglected.
"Healthy Forests Initiative" - open season for logging industry.
"Clear Skies Initiative" - no controls on gross polluters.
"Fighting 'terrorists' over there so we don't have to fight them here" - one of the dumbest (in multiple ways) right-wing lines in history.
"Mission Accomplished" - stuck in a quagmire with no broad coalition of genuine allies.

It's ALL fake. The whole thing. If the right wings's goal is to run this country flat into the ground, it's doing a horrifyingly good. What a horrible, God-awful, unspeakable mess.

57. If you watch a video of one of his speeches when he was
governor of Texas you'll notice that he didn't speak Texan then. He developed that accent so that he could seem like a cowboy while running for president. He is a complete FAKE.

59. In a defense of George,
a lot of people from other parts of the country can pick up southern accents when they are around people who naturally have a twang.

My sister, who has never been anywhere near the South, picked up a twang when she hung around one of her best friends, who was from that region.

George probably picked up his accent from Laura, who IS a native Texan and sounds it.

64. sorry
faking it because he has adopted Texas (poor Texas) is not the same as 'picking up' a twang.

65. Wrong. You just think it's fake because
George is of the opposite political party.

It's VERY easy to pick up that twang if you've lived around somebody for as long as he's lived around Laura.

And Laura's accent is VERY thick.

73. Um, NO.
I think it's fake because it is coming out of the mouth of liar and because he turns it on and off at will.

63. I was a Texas kid too
and I can peg a Texan in California if I hear one.

It amazes me how many people fall for his bullshit.

I spent half my life in Oklahoma, too. No accent (though, I'd say most people there do have one because most don't notice it).

66. He's mastered the accent, but he was laying it on thick today.
He is indeed from Connecticut, however.

67. Did you notice that the night of the "Haunted House" speech from NO
...he had very little accent. I think he was going for the "in control" image vs. his usual "one of the guys" image. Apparantly his supporters will look the other way on many things.
