Senator Ted Kennedy released the following statement regarding the nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court. Kennedy stresses the importance “her ability to be independent from President Bush”, and more…

President Bush has nominated his long-time friend, adviser and current White House counsel Harriet Miers to replace Justice O’Connor as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. We look forward to the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings to learn more about Ms. Miers, her qualifications, her ability to be independent from President Bush, and her views on the role of the Court in protecting fundamental rights and liberties.

1. Miers seems like the ultimate "stealth" candidate
She won't have to do the "John Roberts kabuki dance" of refusing to acknowledge how past stances in court might affect future decisions. She has no record whatsoever, because she has no judicial experience whatsoever!

Dubya's personal incompetence and cronyism have led to a kind of "Gresham's law" for appointments: The weakest one almost always gets the nod from Dumbya.
