The Democrats could pick up a Congressional seat today
Steve Young is expected to clear a majority and obtain Chris Cox's seat in the 48th CD (CA). The Democrats gave him an 81% endorsement. Call all your friends in Orange County and tell them we need this seat. The only way we are going to get anything to go our way in the House is to pick up seats. The majority party controls everything there.

1. That's good news! If I knew anyone there, I would call.
Chris Cox...didn't Bush* boy appoint him for some position for which he had a conflict of interest (a prerequisite for an appointment, I know)? What was it? Something financial...there have been so many slaps in our faces that I can't remember what it was.

22. Whaa????? That should have gotten him fired from his job!
BushCo doesn't like it when people admit a conflict of interest. Glad to hear he did it, but I'm surprised they didn't ask for his resignation over that.

9. Today. A majority ends the process and determines the victor.
If no-one gets a majority, there is a run-off on December 2nd. The Democrats have done their homework this time and are expected to have more voters turn out.

8. Very good. The biggest city has a Democratic mayor and city council
and this is one of the more conservative cities in the district. There is another big city which also has a Democratic mayor and city council but not all of that one is in the district. PPA may screw things up for Steve, though. They are backing the conservative Republican - even though Steve is pro-choice and very liberal.

12. General - if someone gets a majority.
If no one gets a majority, then there's a run-off with each party getting their top candidate.

13. Are Repubs Going to Split over Brewer/Campbell/Gilchrist?
Hi Genius:

I'm just getting ready to go vote (for Young). I'm curious as I've only been following the campaign signs/ads etc. and have not been privy to any inside scoop. Do you think Steve has a chance because the Repubs could split the vote? It seems like a stretch that he could win in this district to me unless something like this is going on, but I have tremendous hope! Give me the scoop!

Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 01:59 PM by genius
The Republicans are more disorganized this time around and the Democrats and Independents (together) outnumber the Republicans.

20. This is great news!
Thanks for the info, Genius. Now that I think about it, this coastal community is full of old hippies who love the environment. I remember Christopher Cox having to tippy-toe around environmental issues so the people from Laguna Beach wouldn't crucify him. I was pleasantly surprised when I moved to Irvine how many Democrats there are. Couple that with the unprecedented hatred of Bush and the White House and we could just pull this off!!

Young, or any Democrat never had a chance. This is Orange County we're talking about.

However there will be a run off in December IIRC since no candidate got a clear majority of the vote.

Doesn't look like there was a concerted effort to run one or two good candidates.

Thanks for the rsults.
