House passes bill to allow death of more animals

Introduced by Rep. Richard Pombo (R-California), the bill passed by the House would allow pesticide users to ignore endangered species when spraying over the land. It would also diminish critical habitat protections, cut wildlife experts out of the loop, weaken the role of science and make taxpayers pay greedy developers to not kill endangered plants and animals. Dubbed “Pombo’s extinction bill” by fishermen and conservationists, the legislation would gut protections for endangered species throughout the nation.

Two weeks ago, Rep. Pombo introduced the bill with little notice in an effort to avoid debate and keep public attention away from its content—right around the time Pombo’s office floated the idea of selling off 15 national parks and mandating advertising in all national park areas.

Despite Pombo’s hopes for an easy win in the House, the substitute amendment supported by Defenders and others came within just six votes of carrying the day. The amendment would have removed many of the worst provisions in Pombo’s bill.

1. Destroying our environment and our legacy to our children
Bush and the right-wingers will destroy this planet to increase corporate profits. Our worse nightmare come true.

We had a few dozen aliens injured by pesticide spray here. Many of them hospitalized. No big deal. The press made nothing out of it. We're the reddest state in the nation. If they don't care about animals, why would they care about humans.
