This was written by George Will??? We really are in the final days
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 12:48 AM by rpannier
On October 5, Washington Post op-ed columnist George F. Will wrote:

It is important that Miers not be confirmed unless, in her 61st year, she suddenly and unexpectedly is found to have hitherto undisclosed interests and talents pertinent to the court's role. Otherwise the sound principle of substantial deference to a president's choice of judicial nominees will dissolve into a rationalization for senatorial abdication of the duty to hold presidents to some standards of seriousness that will prevent them from reducing the Supreme Court to a private plaything useful for fulfilling whims on behalf of friends.

This may be the most articulate article written on her nomination. I can't believe it came from George.

31. Well, Will is about one adjective short of calling Bush a dumbell.

He has neither the inclination nor the ability to make sophisticated judgments about competing approaches to construing the Constitution. Few presidents acquire such abilities in the course of their pre-presidential careers, and this president particularly is not disposed to such reflections.

3. What a great find...and post. "Abandon hope, all ye who enter here."
When Will turns on you, it's all over...the "fat lady" has sung!

Seriously, Will still thinks Dryfuss was guilty, that's how right wing he is.

29. As a lifelong overdicted snot...
...he even disgusts ME.

Let's not get all wound up about his breaking ranks here, though; he's been taken to the woodpile by the conservative powers-that-be before, and he's not even close to being one of the inner circle anymore.

Still, it's nice to see assholes going after assholes for not being big enough assholes. Conservatives want a hardcore primitive elitist to crush all opposition, mouth allegiance to the constitution that they subvert with every waking breath and stand by the forces of power to increase their stranglehold.

Bummer.

Let's not forget, though: she may be every bit the thug these guys want. She may very well be rabidly pro-corporate and we know pretty much for fact that she's an extremist religious nutcase.

19. et tu, Newsmax...
"...the Bush presidency is deteriorating right in front of our eyes.
When a recently re-elected president hits 40% - or 38% two weeks ago - in the polls in his first year of his second term, he is in big trouble politically. And then, when his own base starts to feel free to voice public discontent, what is left?"

http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2005/10/5/111834.shtml

What is left is an incompetent and corrupt drunk that was propped up by bigoted extremist numbskulls like the folks at Newsmax, I guess...

16. I thought about this piece yesterday and it occurred to me
that its very easy to identify a true whore of a journalist these days. The intellectual superman that is George Will shows real courage when the dunce's approval ratings are in the 30's. Yeah, now he's gonna show us his independent thinking. Give it up George. If w pulls into the 50's (not likely) you'll be right up his skanky ass again.

He is an excellent writer, and avoids ridiculousness most of the time in what he writes. Unlike say, mAnn Coulter...

20. he's wrong about this
Any "sound principle of substantial deference to a president's choice" is applicable to the notion of *executive* branch appointees--and even that has limits.

The founders certainly did not intend that the president dictate the direction of the judicial branch.

23. Will was never a cool-aid drinker
What's really surprising is the opposition from the Hags of Hate (Malkin, Coulter) and other bushbots in the media.

Anyone who heard Al Franken's Mastication Theater yesterday probably witnessed the exact thought process that led to Miers nomination. This is actually the only way they can get an evangelical fascist on the court.

Why? Because Will is on TV every week as if it never happened. Behold the power of the mass media to make you think someone is not a bad person just because someone points a video camera at him.

on edit:

Two links about who and WHAT Geo. Will really is:

27. He wrote a column DENYING it, yet Jimmy will NOT BACK DOWN
And I would trust Jimmy with my beating heart in his hands, but I would not trust Will to properly dispose of a dead rodent.

George Will is a disgusting sleazebag; always has been one, always will be one. His legacy is that of a thief, a partisan who will do anything to win.

I wipe my ass on him!!
