DeLay's lawyer is a Dem -The Hill

To help clear his name and regain his standing in the House Republican leadership, former Majority Leader Tom DeLay (Texas) has turned to a longtime Democrat who has contributed to his political opponents.

Dick DeGuerin will defend DeLay as lead council and lead trial lawyer against charges of conspiracy and money laundering brought by Travis County, Texas, District Attorney Ronnie Earle.

DeLay, who almost never has kind words for members of the Democratic — or as he prefers to call it, Democrat — Party, has called Earle, an elected Democratic district attorney, “an unabashed partisan zealot.” Meanwhile, DeLay’s defenders have deemed the indictment a politically motivated attack aimed at removing him from office.

Since the beginning of the 1988 election cycle, DeGuerin has contributed $15,800 to Democratic candidates, including $1,000 in 1996 to former Rep. Nick Lampson (D-Texas), who plans to challenge DeLay for his seat next fall.

And it shouldn't be surprising. DeGuerin was picked not for his personal beliefs, but because he has an astounding track record of winning even the most desperate of cases. Anyone who could get Robert Durst off the hook is worth his weight in gold. Delay knows that.

The first thing that came to my mind when I heard that DeGuerin was representing Delay was that Delay is worried and knows that these are serious charges. DeGuerin is effective and tends to represent mainly guilty people who need a desperate defense.
