to me, elitism is when people receive different treatment in a non-technical capacity because of prestige. Only allowing the pilots of a plane into the cockpit is not elitism because it is their technical capacity to fly the plane but only allowing college graduates to get up out of their seats during the flight would be elitism.

Instead of making a case that she is qualified, her supporters try to dismiss the legitimacy of the argument that she is not qualified to sit on the Supreme Court by calling it "elitist." That is like countering to the argument, "the pilot of this plane isn't qualified to fly the plane" with "that's elitist!" instead of trying to argue that s/he is is licensed to the fly the plane.

to put people in positions of power and grave responsibility as long as they're somebody you'd want to have a beer with. That's much more important than ability. Ability & quality & expertise, that's so elitist. :(

Support for civil rights used to be "elitist"--as in "Elitist liberals won't have to work with those people."

Lately I've seen the same empty-headed phrase used in opposition to gun control and environmentalism...by the same sort of folks who used to oppose the civil rights movement...

I guess lawyers and senators are included in the elitist club.

Brit Hume and Fred Barnes were giggling over the fact that "all but two" of the conservatives who oppose Miers went to Ivy League schools and THAT must be why they don't think she's qualified.

when asked last night on Hardball about Miers' qualifications, started talking about how seven of the nine justices of the Supreme Court had gone to Ivy League schools.

What the hell has that got to do with anything? Nobody's questioning her education. Nobody has implied that she isn't good enough because she didn't go to Harvard or Yale.

What people are saying is that she doesn't have the legal qualifications for the job. It doesn't matter where she went to college. Hutchison talked about colleges and other such nonsense because it was easier than defending Miers' qualifications.
