Theres a primary brewing in the Buckeye state. Who will have YOUR support?

Me, put me down for Major Paul Hackett.

1. Brown
there is one way to move the party toward the progressive side, and it's not to bash non-progressives.

It's to vote for progressive dems in primaries.

Brown. :bounce:

2. Brown

Brown is without a doubt my favorite Dem. in Ohio. He has the experience and a proven progressive record.

I'll be the first in line to volunteer and contribute to Brown.

I'll vote for Hackett. He's fine, but I don't think he is the best we have to offer by a long shot.

3. Brown had the opportunity to announce two months ago
Brown was the first name mentioned to run after Strickland decided to run for Governor. He declined and left the door open for Ryan who declined and left the door open for Hackett. Hackett finally jumps in and Brown pulls this switch.

Brown's politics are great but this is absolute bullshit. I don't live in Ohio but if I did I'd be voting for Hackett.

Major Hackett is hungry." - Bob Brigham

Brown had his chance. He left the ball in Hacketts court and now he's trying to take it back. Fcuk that.

19. I'm surprised he changed his mind now that Hackett
said he would run. Too bad they can't 'spread the wealth'. What a waste if two good Dems battle in a primary.

5. Hackett
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 07:13 PM by BL611
I am probably closer to Brown's politics then Hacketts, but it is going to be more beneficial to the dems to have Hackett in a high profile position then Brown, not to mention as posted by others brown had his chance and turned down the nomination. Since I'm not an Ohio voter it really makes no difference what I think though anyway (I guess Hackett will get my $40 dollars since Hillary should be fine here in NY.....).

7. I voted for Hackett
cause I remember him from the congressional race and I liked what I saw.

I'm sure Brown is very qualified..I just wish he would have have known when they asked him in the beginning and not had Hackett and his supporters get all excited about it.

Brown has paid his political dues and is the kind of progressive we need in the Senate.

15. I think Brown and DeWine
is a close call. I think the Dems would be passionate about Brown, but not the majority of voters. I think they would however be passionate about Hackett.

Hackett has bipartisan appeal. His 'straight talk' is loved by the press, democrat, independent, rural, and even some republican voters. He proved that in OH-2.

18. yes - my rural
friends and family are mostly independent. I could see them rally for Hackett. Between Brown and DeWine, I could see them scratch their heads and just go with whichever commerical got the most play. I know it is sad to say that, but it is the truth.

20. I will defer to our Buckeye DUers
They have a better feel than we do. Hackett could very well be more "conservative" than Brown, who has a record of opposing anti-labor trade deals. On the other hand, Hackett is the Wes Clark of Ohio, and he could attract a lot of people that voted for Bush in 2004.

If this were an Indiana race, I would always vote for the most progressive candidate.

What say you, Buckeyes?

21. At some point we've got to stop playing strategic and safe
Edited on Fri Oct-07-05 09:51 PM by Awsi Dooger
Chris Matthews may sound like a slantboard moron when he's screaming at Howard Dean or some other Democrat to define what the party stands for, or was Iraq a mistake, but we're foolish to belief there isn't an underlying truth behind the questions.

I'm afraid a Sherrod Brown will sound just like the other Democrats I've fruitlessly rooted for in senate campaigns in 2002 and 2004, plenty sensible and definitely superior to the opponent, but simply not special enough to oust an incumbent. Getting rid of an incumbent requires pizazz, or an implosion by your opponent like we got in Arkansas '02 and nearly in Kentucky '04.

Otherwise, you're never going to evict an incumbent with a blase predictable approach, particularly in a red-leaning state like Ohio. The middle of the roaders will naturally default to DeWine and a comfy feeling, rationalizing the past 4 or 6 years haven't been so bad after all. It was the same reasoning behind my support of John Edwards last year, that he had special qualities that MIGHT appeal to the swayable center and oust an incumbent, while someone strategic and safe like John Kerry was just good enough to get you beat, the phrase I used many times.

Brown means a close race, and likely a narrow defeat. Hackett flings open the parameters, a possible embarrassing defeat by substantial margin if he's a loose cannon with bizarre quotes. But he's also a danger to screw up our game plan, and win by 5 points. Ill gladly gamble on a rare peak at what the latter scenario looks like.
