The ghost of Teri Schiavo....The nomination of Harriet Miers
:tinfoilhat:

In their post-election euphoria, the GOP believed they had a 'mandate' and 'moral issues' was the catalyst. With their swollen egos they fell face first into the Schiavo affair thinking they would further their standing with the moral voters. They believed their own PR and spin about how they had achieved majorities in the Senate, House and re-election GWB.

To their horror, their poll numbers plummeted. After their intrusion and grandstanding into what should have been a private family matter within the state of Florida, many terra and taxes Republicans and others woke from their slumber.

Realizing ever so slowly that it was the 'terra and taxes' mantra that really got GWB back in office, KKKarl thought it would be a smart move for Incurious George to throw a bone to the horrified moderates.

Hence, the nomination of a not obvious wingnut judge to the SC. Instead of the in-your-face obvious zealots (and there is a pretty long list to choose from), GWB picked two stealth candidates, with Miers being the even bigger enigma.

Now, both of these picks could be Scalia clones, but it isn't obvious. By keeping his choices to the unknown column, he keeps moderates, who were VERY concerned that wingnuts REALLY did control the party, quiet.

The extreme reactions from the RW now, I believe, were not expected to be this hot. These are the 'trust and faith' voters (aka sheeple) and KKKarl expected them to STFU once GWB used his 'code words' in describing Miers.

1. Of course...
...with both O'Conner and Souter, they used or were reported to have used the code words prior to their confirmation as well. These wingnuts won't be satisfied unless the nominee has chained a poor gay black man behind their truck and sped down the highway flying the confederate flag.

4. Make no mistake, they are zealots but
I think KKKarl thought that the usual "code words" inserted into GWB's assurances on Miers would be enough to quiet them.

The GOP made a deal with the zealots and, being zealots, they demand their payment.

The GOP coalition between traditional Rockefeller Republicans, neocons and wingnut zealots was always an uneasy alliance. KKKarl's strategy was to play to the wingnuts in coded words that the traditional Republicans wouldn't really get.

This time the coded words didn't work to appease the zealots but the moderates are thinking that maybe the GOP isn't as extreme as they appeared last spring during Schiavo.
