It occurs to me that the Miers nomination is a ruse....
Given that she is an inexperienced crony, unacceptable to either the Democrats or a number of Republicans, it is pretty plain that she will soon be withdrawing her name from consideration in the nomination process. Why would Bush and the Administration prolong this...

...except to then nominate Alberto Gonzales, who would then appear to be a competent and acceptable choice in comparison. THAT is what frightens ME.

1. Won't work...Gonzales is not liked by the wingnut base...
They have the same objections to him that they have to Miers. They are not sure that he is far radical right enough.

2. That's what I think.
All the yelling on the right is orchestrated by Rove. Next to Miers, almost anybody appears to be a legal genius.

3. If Miers doesn't make it then they will slip
Priscilla Owens into the SC slot. I certainly do not want her or any other Texan.

4. If Meirs doesn't make it then they'll have tasted their first blood and
they'll realize that they never have to lose to this clown again. The deal on the filibuster will be out and even if the Republicans try to shove it down our throats, there is always procedural delay. The public would love it. Stop everything to protect the country.

If they let Meirs in, we're doomed. It means we won't win the easy ones. I'm not heartened by a party with people who vote for the Bush Tax Cut, e.g. Feinstein.

I think they'll toss her and then we'll start fighting.

5. They can't be this stupid
I do not believe that this administration is facing a supreme court nomination with no strategy. Even Santa Claus makes a list and checks it twice. They knew they would get to make at least one, probably two, and maybe three appointments and they had five years to get their act together. This does not pass the smell test.

6. I've been postulating that theory for some time
No idea if it is true, but it would work for the Monkey. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=5013300&mesg_id=5017913

7. For Gonzales? No way.
The only criticism that matters here is from the Right, and they hate Gonzales even more than Miers.

8. You're giving them way too much credit
It's the incompetence. It's the narrow circle of inbred Bushbots, which nowadays is increasingly small. Miers comes from that group.

When I think about it, I can't escape the feeling that Bush did exactly what one might expect...nominated someone among his tiny band of friends. Why is everyone from soup to nuts surprised?

If what you suggest is true...and correct me if I'm wrong...that Bush and friends put up a straw nominee to knock down in some grand pre-planned effort to coalesce support around some stealth nominee whom they wanted all along...it suggests that *Bush & Co. are somehow competent, even smart.

I don't buy that line of thinking. It's much more simple than that.

I believe they just screwed up again, as usual.

14. with you there. They just screwed up.
We give these dickheads way too much credit.

As I've often said, Karl Rove is not an "evil genius." He's just evil.

9. Let 'em put up Gonzales. Knock down two in a row if that's what it takes.
Or more.

Go to the mat on these cronies and reich wingers. Bush does not have a mandate to tilt the court.

10. The more I think about it, you may be right.....
But I think it was a ruse that backfired on them. They thought the Democrats would raise a stink about the nominee as being a crony and not competent, but it was their own Party that was the most angry about the nomination. That would have surprised the shit out of them, I am sure. They had never wandered off the reservation before? But their plan was to get the Democrats to turn down the first nominee, which would make it almost politically impossible to turn down two in a row - without looking like obstructionists. And the second nominee would be the nominee they really wanted in the first place?

12. On further thought, what was Bush thinking??
I think it was a ruse but why ? I think he maybe wanted a diversion from the Rove and Libby indictments coming down the road. Each of these propagandists are the closest advisors to George W Bush and Dick Cheney. They are real close. Chances are that whatever they know that they might be indicted for, Dubya and Dick knew also. Therefore the reason for the ruse.

11. I agree it's a setup
Bush is dumb, but he's not as dumb as he often appears or that we assume he is. He's not dumb enough to nominate someone so unqualified, and to piss off his base this bad.

Miers may stick around a little longer, but she'll likely withdraw herself within a week or so. That way Bush doesn't have to "go back" on his "I won't withdraw her" talk. IMO that's exactly how it's been planned from the start. Then Bush can say "Moderates, I kept my word, she withdrew, I din't withdraw her. I tried to be moderate, but you didn't support me enough with Miers so..." and nominate the wingiest wingnut he can find. His far right will be thrilled and they'll forgive him for absolutely everything. He doesn't care if he totally pisses off the left. He relishes it. And moderates are too feckless to matter to him. Filibusters and nuclear options don't bother him a bit. The only ones who can sink his nominee is the far right.

You've heard the expression "crazy like a fox"? IOW, not really crazy, just faking it to throw you off guard. Well Bush is "stupid like a fox".

P.S.-I think the current outrage on the far-right is genuine. I don't think it's false outrage planted by Rove, et al. IMO, they do think he's that dumb. It's all part of Bush's plan.

=====================

The question we should be concentrating on is, how do we respond when he does precisely this?

13. Yes I had the same feeling. She was so obviously a bad choice.
Must be a set up. However hard to tell with Bush, he is stupid enough
to think she is a great choice.
