The reason the right is abandoning Bush

is that they are realizing that he is incapable of pushing their agenda. They haven't given up on their ideas-they are giving up on a man who is politically dead in the water.

Bush was, and remains, a figurehead. The people who put him there, and who are now showing their disappointment, are not our political friends.

Just a friendly reminder.

1. Ann Coulter's tirades this week are outward signs of that.

We also see groups like the Heritage Foundation expressing distaste in the President (even saying *'s words about giving NOLA all the help they needed as "all talk, no action" a month after that speech).

But, we need to keep our friends close, and our enemies closer. We need to keep our eyes on the far-right wingnuts.

was also an indication of where the powers-that-be stand on their loyalty to Shrub. With "censorship" gone...this Admin.'s a 'paper tiger.'

8. The 2008 Republican nominee is going to run against Bush.

I think a small part of this is that they're setting up for 2008, and part of that plan is that the Republicans will want their nominee to be seen as running against Bush.

So long as the focus is on Bush's personality, they'll have a chance of distracting people from the issues and they'll have a chance of getting in another Republicans who will continue to polarize wealth and opportunity by destroying labor and ripping people off with the tax code.

9. I think you are right

and in addition, whenever the Dems try to do the same thing, we will be accused of playing the politics of personal destruction and of running against someone who isn't even in the race. When we do it, it will be "going negative". When they do it, it will be "an honest and straightforward review of past mistakes" which will serve the duel purpose of looking good while signaling to the base that THIS time we will get the job done.

So, in essense, if GWB didn't let those gays get abortions (or whatever the hot cultural issue is), the next guy really won't let them.
