I hope Cheney does not resign. Would be lightening rod, * picks new VP
There are rumors that Cheney may resign over Plamegate. This seems like a near worst case scenario to me - an utterly wasted opportunity to take down a criminal administration - and worse still more of the Bush talent for turning failure and disaster into a victory.

If Cheney acts as a "lightening rod", takes the heat off of Bush, and resigns:

- it could give Bush a fresh start, instead of taking down his whole regime;

- he could appoint a new VP, and then groom that person to run as GOP candidate in 08.

Someone tell me that this is not a likely scenario. Keep in mind that Presidential Succession is irrelevant here because the President will still be the President. It would be the same scenario as if Dick's ticker stopped. Bush would get to appoint a new VP. Who would he choose? As far as I know, nobody has any say in this. There is no congressional review, no popular vote, nothing. Bush could just pick anybody he damn well pleases. Could our next VP be...

Jeb?
Daddy?
"Dr." James Dobson?
John Bolton?
Condi Rice?
John Roberts?
Al Gonzales?
Ken Ley?
Bill Frist?
SC Justice Miers?

2. I want him to be indicted.
If he is indicted there will be a trial.

If there is a trial he could be found guilty.

If he is found guilty he could go to jail.

If he goes to jail he will probably die there.

Works for me.

Bye Dick.

4. If the Grand Jury indicts Cheney, he's got to go. No question about it.
Cheney will be out.

Bush could select another VP, with congressional approval. I don't think it would be Condi. It would have to be someone absolutely untouched by the CIA Leak or any other impending scandal. Probably somebody like George Pataki ... someone that would be "accepted by all." Bush can't stand McCain. Giuliani would infuriate the base. He doesn't want to take any Republican out of Congress ... 2006 congressional races will already be tough enough for him.

A safe milquetoast ... a guy with absolutely no charisma. A Gerald Ford for our times. Tom Ridge? Pataki? A Republican Joe Lieberman. Joe Lieberman???

5. If bush gets to pick a VP
the 25th Amendment says the president gets to nominate subject to approval by a majority vote of both houses of congress. unfortunately, we know who has a majority in both houses.

7. If Cheney resigns........it's all over for bush*
All the most corrupt Texas politicians will go down together. bush has picked the cream of the crop as far as Texas neocons go. They have shown thier colors and they aren't pretty colors. They are going down, and who else can he draw from? Miers is second string player and she isn't selling to the base. And if you think bubba the dog catcher or some guy named Cooter is gonna be sold to the American public you are just as delusional as bush* Nah.....the jig is up.

Carpe Diem. Now.

13. no, don't think so
I'd have to research it (as I don't recall what happened when Agnew resigned...little before my time)

But, I don't think Ford was "next in line" at the time.
