Katrina Republicans
I live in Pearl River County Mississippi which borders St Tammany Parish Louisiana. Both voted overwhelmingly for bush in 2000 and 2004. Citizens from both entities in overwhelming numbers are insisting that the federal government come to their aid now and with billions of dollars. Am I confused, or what?

1. Well, see, it's like this.
The government shouldn't help OTHER people. But, see, these people are SPECIAL and the government should help THEM. Get it?

3. Its OK when it is them in trouble...every one else just wants a free Caddy
This is the way conservatives all over America are. The government keeps taking all their money away and giving it to poor people to buy Caddies. But then they are the first with their hands out when it is them in trouble. They will learn nothing from this, about what a permanant state of misery and suffering is like.

4. If you had access to food & shelter - if all you had to do was
walk over a few tree stumps and make it to the "cleared highway" you were okay. You got out, or what you needed within a few weeks.

If you were underwater or unprepared for the levee break and sitting on your couch - and not able/or not able to get to the attick - you were in trouble. In trouble that you would die. Then if you got rescueed - that they took you not to a real shelter.

How could there not be a place for rescued people to go? Well the "sheltered people" had no where to go - so I suppose it is fine that the rescued were not treated any different than the "sheltered" in the dome. But none of them were treated as americans expect to be treated at home. That for whatever reason - the powers that be were not there making great decisions and mitigating the worst situations. What a lesson. Your government couldn't be bothered to prioratize mitigating as A1. Days and days passed with bad decisions - and for some reason the crisis of bad decisions were not realised by the people in power till - End of WEdnesday - Thursday.

8. Hello RST, welcome and thanks for the input
We had the pleasure of visiting your town a few years back. Enjoyed the sports museum with the statues of Bear Bryant and Sug "Jerden" out front. I'm sure CCR wouldn't mind. By the way, I ain't no Senators Son.

7. How can you tell it's the majority of residents?
I mean.. is it that there's only letters to the editor from Rethugs?

Have they done local polls showing that the majority overwhelmingly think the feds "did a heckuva job"

10. Excellent question
- The vast majority of the voting public in both governmental entities voted for bush in the last two presidential elections; thats public record.

- The vast majority of citizens in both governmental entities insist that the federal government come to their aid now and with billions of tax dollars. I've been watching and observing for seven weeks, trust me.

- Ergo, I activated my deductive reasoning and came up with the supposition that people who support bush want a lot of government aid and they want it now. In other words when its convenient they are democrats.

Your question - NO, the local republicans (who are now acting like democrats) don't think the feds have done a heckuva job because they ain't getting enough federal support which on a normal lightly rainy day they would assign to only those less worthy.

17. Do those demanding the services, think that they, themselves
should also pay more taxes - to ensure that money is there for said services? If not - no conversion, just hypocrisy.

9. In the Northwest,
Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 07:49 PM by Steve_DeShazer
Where I live, the Republican-leaning voters are the beneficiaries of FAR more federal dollars than the Democratic ones are.

The Bonneville Power Administration, the local shipping companies, the irrigators, the Columbia River irrigation projects, Enron, the Hanford cleanup, the leasing of cheap federal lands for cattle ranchers, all are examples of ridiculous federal largesse that benefits big business at the expense of the people.

Yet the Republicans here in the Northwest, who are narrowly outnumbered, continue to bleat like the sheep they are for MORE tax cuts, ensuring their eventual extinction.

Jeez, people can really be stupid.

You're not confused, BOSSHOG. You've nailed it.

on edit: I love the term Katrina Republicans, and I'm stealing it!

14. Steal away my Friend
Lets spread the word near and far.

Paraphrasing an interesting article a few days ago in the New Orleans Times-Picayune (one damn fine newspaper), bush is having trouble with social security reform because his base doesn't want anyone fucking with entitlement programs which are good for them. Your point exactly. Let's keep fighting the good fight.

To push that issue a little farther, let us see if we can make KATRINA REPUBLICANS a household word, LTTE's and whatever. I'll do my best from South Mississippi.

18. Just got off the phone with friend in Pearl River County
He and wife are staunch Bush/Cheney supporters. (They have two draft age offspring, but the male is about 30 and the female is disabled, so they are just "sure" they needn't fear losing their offspring to Bush's fraudulent war.) He has a blue "FEMA roof" on his house. Insurance adjustor says will try to meet with him in a couple weeks. (What's it been...7 weeks since Katrina?)

We try not to bring up the Evil Regime with these friends, because it always leads to an argument.

But that's okay. Right now our silence is golden. They are seeing firsthand exactly what THEIR president is made of. Heh heh. Rock on!
