Possible cover-up a focus in CIA leak case: lawyers

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Prosecutors investigating the outing of a covert CIA operative opened a Web site on Friday to post possible indictments next week and were said by lawyers in the case to be focusing on whether top White House aides tried to conceal their actions from investigators.

Karl Rove, President George W. Bush's top political adviser, and Lewis Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, are at the center of special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald's investigation into who leaked the identity of CIA officer Valerie Plame.

Plame's identity was leaked to the media after her diplomat husband, Joseph Wilson, challenged the Bush administration's prewar intelligence on Iraq.

Best line in this article...

Others suggested it could be part of an effort by Fitzgerald to increase pressure on potential targets to cut a deal. "We're all grasping at straws," one lawyer conceded.

1. This makes sense
"Others suggested it could be part of an effort by Fitzgerald to increase pressure on potential targets to cut a deal."

3. Wow! Sounds like Fitz is playing hardball
This could be bigger than I ever believed. Maybe it's the tipping point of this administration. I hope so. So much. We all do here at DU. It has been a long time coming.

Let's keep the faith! Can't wait for next week!

4. Ah, yes, listen to the lawyers.
Yes, they would like to get America arguing over whether or not perjury or obstruction of justice is "no big thing."

Just the type of distraction they need to delay the fallout from the truth long enough for all sorts of DC scum to cover their asses and portfolios.

I'm sure Fitz is looking at the coverup.

I'm pretty sure that's only one small bit of what he's looking at, though.

5. He uses the web site of his Chicago office to announce indictments there.
He will use this new web site for the same purpose. There is no mob of reporters shouting questions when there is no spokesman making announcements. Fitzgerald does not believe in trying cases in the media.
