Another elevation from Texas Supreme Court?
Nathan Hecht, Harriet Miers' No. 1 fan, may well be a favorite for the federal bench

Nathan Hecht's unshakable legal conservatism frequently enrages his more liberal critics. Sitting for 17 years on the state's highest civil court, Hecht, 55, has made decisions that have influenced the lives of millions of Texans on everything from the way they finance public schools to the amount of money they can collect after a debilitating auto accident.
Now, after an intense stint as White House defender-in-chief of controversial Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, Hecht may have bolstered his own political capital. The White House put Hecht in the spotlight in the days after the nomination was announced by making him available for questions from evangelical pastors and skeptical conservatives. Some Texas attorneys say Hecht — dubbed "Hector" by President Bush — has his eye on a federal judgeship on the Washington, D.C., appellate circuit, a position for which he was once reportedly considered. Because of what he called Hecht's extreme conservatism, Wheat predicted a "bruising battle" if Hecht is ever nominated to the federal bench...
Texas Monthly magazine dubbed Hecht one of the most powerful people in Texas. Presidential adviser Karl Rove served as a consultant on one of his judicial campaigns... Dallas attorney Paula Sweeney, a former president of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association and a member of the Texas Supreme Court's Rules Advisory Committee, maintains that Hecht's opinions have betrayed "a decided anti-consumer tilt." "He's been at the forefront for a very long time in reducing citizens rights in a very steady, gradual, constant stream of opinions," Sweeney charged, adding that "he's a very smart man."...
