Another unknown or someone like Priscilla Owen?

Younger, smarter, solidly rightwing and easily confirmable.

The nickname alone says it all.

11. Owen or Brown.
The Dems will be made to be the bad guys in the Miers withdrawal and the repugs will, if necessary, use the nuclear option to ensure that an extremist is appointed.

That was my prediction right from the start......now watch it play out. (I hope I'm wrong)

Bingo.
Or fill in the rad right blank. Which means we'll get to watch a nasty filibuster fight in the Senate, which will further weaken Bush. He's so toast.

28. I disagree on one point.
IMO a filibuster will STRENGTHEN Bush. It will bring back the base that he lost because of the Miers nomination. They WANT a fight.

30. Give them one.
The Republicans are in disarray; Frist is tangled up with the SEC and will probably have to step down as majority leader at the very least. If they go nuclear, Reid will retaliate by freezing their agenda--which is already in the hopper. Bushco is totally unraveled. They'll be the lamest lame ducks in history--weak, ineffectual and clueless. Meltdown, baby.

Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 09:05 AM by bowens43
that there will be another opening on the supreme court in the next 3 years. If we lose the ability to use the threat of a filibuster we will be in BIG trouble. The make-up of the supreme court is far more important then stopping bushes agenda.

39. If Brown, Owen or another such incompetent wingnut is nominated
there's no point in saving the filibuster for some possible nomination that might happen down the road. That would be like Gen MacLellan refusing to engage the Confederate army because he didn't want to get his men killed. Why have an army if you're afraid to commit it to crucial battles?

40. Not really.
The next Justice to leave will most likely be a liberal not a right leaning moderate. My original point was that Miers was an unknown. We will now certainly get a known right wing extremist. We WILL filibuster and lose the right to filibuster. If bush gets a third nomination we will have no say at all.

It would have been better to confirm an unknown and avoid a filibuster at this time then to use and lose the filibuster on a KNOWN extremist.

13. My guess is...
Bud Schlopel - bartender of the "Ya'll Come Back Saloon" in Crawford Texas.

As George puts it: "Bud is a heck of a guy, and serves a hell of a mean whiskey sour. And he's a problem solver too. Many a night I'd hang my head at the bar, Bud pourin' me drink after drink, discussin' Iraq and Cindy Sheehan or that Stepford wife of mine, and ol' Bud offered up some of the best advice I ever heard. He's the kinda down home, no-nonsense type we need at the Supreme Court."

The sad part is, I think a few of us wouldn't be all that surprised at something like this.

20. Well, look at lessons he will likely draw from Miers.
Her biggest problem from his point of view? She divided his base by not being 100% openly and unabashedly ready to abolish Roe v Wade.

I think he'll put up a real hard Religious Rightist now. He'll see that as serving "the peoples" desires.

He knows he can get him confirmed, and at this point, showing he can still get something, (anything!) done, is more important to him than pleasing a political base that he no longer needs. Remember, his concern is entirely for himself and his image, not for his party or his "movement".
