Bush Plays to Base, Ignores Problems Facing Working Families

Washington, DC - President Bush delivered yet another speech loaded with empty
rhetoric and broken promises on the economy today, even as Americans are
looking for real solutions to the economic problems facing our country.

Democratic National Committee Communications Director Karen Finney issued the
following statement:

"In yet another sign that the White House is distracted by the Fitzgerald
investigation and feeling the heat from its conservative base, President Bush
apparently thought it was more important to use a major speech on economic
policy to appease his base with tired rhetoric than to present any new ideas
for fixing the real problems facing America's working families. With oil
companies reporting record profits and Republicans in Congress trying to give
them another $3 billion tax break, President Bush failed yet again to tell the
American people how he intends to help them pay $50 for a tank of gas or heat
their homes this winter.

"Americans deserve better than President Bush's failed leadership on the
economy. Democrats are committed to economic policies that put the American
economy back to work for working Americans, instead of the Republicans and
their special interest friends."

1. They need to repeat that phrase as often as possible:
"working families". It unites the entire Democratic base - even the parts that have been voting Republican for 30 years. It is the basis of the memes that will bring a populist progressive Democratic Party back to power.
