Bid for More Home Heating Aid Fails in Senate

Associated Press
Thursday, October 27, 2005; Page A02

The Senate decided yesterday the money was not there for a substantial spending boost for the federal home heating program, deflecting arguments that soaring energy prices could force the poor to choose between heat and food this winter.

Senators voted 54 to 43 in favor of a proposal to boost the fiscal 2006 budget for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program from $2.2 billion to $5.1 billion. A 60-vote majority was needed to approve new spending not coupled with equivalent spending cuts.

Northern senators who pushed for increased spending for the program, led by Jack Reed (D-R.I.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine), argued that low-income families would be particularly hurt by the surge in fuel costs.

People could have to "choose between keeping the heat on, putting food on the table or buying much-needed prescription drugs," Collins said. "No family should need to make such terrible choices."

1. All those who voted against should have to live in a freezer for a wk
with minimal food. This was a bad vote. When will they be happy, when more of the poor are dead, or sick in the hospital or what? I really don't understand their reasoning a lot of the time. That's a rhetorical statement.

billions on a war of choice... but who don't give a damn about their country's poor.

We have become an empire, I think.

8. I'm surprised a Republican was pushing for this
Giving money to the poor and needy. Hardly something they're good at. Hats off to you Susan Collins.

Will the death toll this winter, and I have been hearing it is being predicted to be a little worse than normal, at least in Michigan, be as high as it is in Iraq? Will there be public outrage?

My prediction yes and no in that order.

13. She has choice
From the vote count, I would guess, it went down party lines for the most part. Just a guess mind you. And not all the Repubs are from down south. They're elected up here in the great white north too. So I'm giving credit where its due. And shaming those who didn't do anything to keep people from freezing to death in their own homes.

(Xcel Energy) has already been warning people that the bills will be at least 70% higher than last year. This is gonna kill me, I was paying 4-$500 a month last year for gas and electric in the winter.

22. It was originally Reed, Kerry, with Kennedy and Snowe
They added Collins as a sponsor (dropping Kerry) to get more votes. As Kerry/Reed it got only 50, as Reed/Collins it got 54 - they need 60 because of they are adding costs to the budget.

they give nothing back in profits.

400 billion for the military.
5 billion for poor people.

Gosh, what a real splurge in compassionate spending! Eat bombs serfs!
