Panel Approves Cuts In Food Stamp, Commodity Programs
The House Agriculture Committee today approved its $3.7 billion portion of the FY06 budget reconciliation package by taking actions that CBO estimated would cost almost 300,000 food stamp recipients their benefits and deny about 40,000 low-income children their automatic eligibility for school lunches and breakfasts.
Meanwhile, the Republican majority on the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted early today to slash about $11 billion from Medicaid, even as it targeted increased healthcare assistance to those affected by the Gulf Coast hurricanes. In approving its portion of the FY06 budget reconciliation package, the panel also approved $1 billion in subsidies to help low-income families pay their winter heating bills and set aside another $1.5 billion in rebates to help TV viewers buy converters for the upcoming switch from analog to digital television signals.
