Bill Maher: Stop Shushing your Audience
Damn I can't even watch what used to be a good show anymore, cause every time the audience drowns out fuckwits like Tony Snow, I know Bill Maher is going to hold his hand up and say "Oh shut up" it really bugs the living shit out of me.

1. The shame is that Bill is not knowledgeable enough to call a lie.
He knows Snow is Faux and that means numerous lies are being told, but he isn't sure enough of the facts to call them out.

2. I think when Billy Connolly took on Snow, that Maher woke up a bit.
Connolly has gone toe to toe with Snow from the beginning, when Snow made that inane comment about Libby being indicted for talking to some reporters, it was Connolly who finally said 'This is not about talking to reporters, this is about perjury and obstuction of justice.'

3. It's necessary
Shouting these people down might be titillating, but it doesn't help expose these people's twisted views via debate. Treating them with respect keeps them coming onto the show where their views can be exposed and picked apart. Jon Stewart does the same thing.

5. But Jon Stewart does it differently...
Bill Maher actually says "shut up" to his audience- Stewart's approach is way different and doesn't offend me.

8. This is not only during the Bill Maher show...
Edited on Fri Oct-28-05 11:49 PM by Lost-in-FL
You see (hear) that a lot on radio talk shows. "Love Line" is a prime example although it is not a political show. I think it is people's fault for allowing it and my concern is that it will be something accepted. I do think Bill does it not to loose track of what he is saying but I think sometimes he can be too rough. About "Love Line" hosts I think they are both just arrogant bastards.

9. I agree
I wish the applause on the Maher show would basically disappear (I know thats not possible) Better to let Snow and Tucker hoist themselves on their on petards.... Applause just delays their humiliation :)

10. Uhhh...then don't tape the show live?
Edited on Sat Oct-29-05 12:11 AM by Jack_Dawson
Or if you hate applause, tape it in Kansas. But WTF you tape a show in a blue state and your audience is going to reflect that. Stop acting like it's SO ANNOYING when your audience agrees with you.

7. its part of his cranky gimmick.
he does it when they applaud his statements too, or if they gasp at a joke.

12. I see no problem with this
He's just keeping the show on track, rather than have it turn into a circus.

Part of the job of a host is to keep things moving along, and not to interrupt the flow.

13. You Maher apologists
crack me up. He actually tells his audience to shut up, and not in a good way. Jon Stewart accomplishes the same goal, but without being disrespectful.

21. Me too.
I lost all respect for Maher when he caved completely to the repukes after 9-11. He has no guts.

22. The next to last time i saw maher, he let swiftboat guy have free reign
The last and final time was when he extolled the many virtues of the Jan 2005 "elections" in Iraq, saying "we" were wrong in criticzing Bush's handling of things because just look at the outcome that they (Bush junta) had "pulled off".

When he had O'Neill the swiftboat lier on, he let the SOB go on and on about how terrible it was that John Kerry's actions had led to Vietnam being the terrible, communist run, with no freedoms, place it supposedly is now. This was in response to an assertion by Maher, which he could have backed up and should have been prepared to back up, that Kerrys actions helped end a war that was destroying Vietnam in order to save it and that country was better for it.

Any person here could have formulated the closer of a response to O'Neill that both Bush's were instrumental in enabling a regime and a political and economic system in China that Vietnam is attempting to emulate and which is remarkaby similar in every way, but no, he is not even that deep.

14. I'm getting sick to the back teeth of repukes coming on and fillibustering
Edited on Sat Oct-29-05 11:45 AM by Godlesscommieprevert
They dominate the whole fucking discussion and nobody reins them in apart from people like Carlin and Connolly, but they still go on flapping their mouths at a hundred miles a minute as if no-ne had interrupted and just take over hte whole show.

16. Exactly my point
The only reality check is the audience, who Maher despises.

17. AMEN!...
I hate when he does that. Do it respectfully, or just do not do it. All in the name of some fucking "respect" for some fucking rightwing freak. If they did not spew bullshit, the audience would not need to cheer a smackdown!
