Why is Georgie trying to scare me with Avian Flu??
I mean - it's a fricking bird disease. I'm still waiting for the damn killer bees to come kill me.

And now Georgie wants to spend 6.5billion dollars along with telling me that I'm gonna die of Avian Bird if we don't hand over the money

Stop it Georgie - you're just crying wolf!

48. The next scourge . . .
. . . is already well established. One of the key symptoms of it is that the person who has it not only doesn't know that they have it, but thinks others around them are the sick ones. Worse than avian flu, works than CJD, worse than terrorists, worse than anthrax. It's insidious, fatal not only for those who receive it but for those who are exposed to it. The symptoms are horrid as it makes people horribly ugly and absurdly stupid, but yet they don't realize that they are so. It's called RFBROT: republican/fundamentalist brain rot.

Just from direct contact with an infected bird.

Is that correct?

That said, it doesn't take much (a bit of DNA mutation here or there) et voila! Pandemic. Look at the article on the DU homepage for some reality of the threat.

15. Virtually All new strains of influenza originate in birds

and then mutate and move to mammals (often pigs) in places where large numbers are in close contact such as rural China and other parts of SE Asia.

They then mutate/jump to humans from those animals.

However, it's not impossible for a strain to jump more directly to humans.

I take it you think that the Pandemic of 1918 is a myth. Are you a Pandemic Deniar ?

Is Avian Flu another Pentagon Hoax?

F. William Engdahl

October 30, 2005

No sooner are indictments being handed down to Scooter Libby, the Chief of Staff of the Vice President of the United States for lies and coverup of information used deliberately to suppress the fact the Bush Administration had no ‘smoking gun’ to prove Saddam Hussein was building a nuclear arsenal, but a new scandal is surfacing every bit as outrageous and ultimately, likely also criminal.

Against all scientific prudence and normal public health procedure, the world population is being whipped up into a fear frenzy by irresponsible public health officials from the US Administration to WHO to the United States Centers for Disease Control. They all warn about the imminent danger that a malicious viral strain might spread from infected birds, primarily in Vietnam and other Asian centers, to contaminate the entire human species in pandemic proportions. Often the flu pandemic of 1918 which is said to have killed 18 million worldwide, is cited as an example of what ‘might’ lie in store for us.

The only medicine we are told which reduce the symptoms of general or seasonal influenza and ‘possibly’ might reduce symptoms also of Avian Flu, is a drug called Tamiflu. Today the giant Swiss pharmaceutical firm, Roche, holds the sole license to manufacture Tamiflu. Due to the media panic, the order books at Roche today are filled to overflowing. Roche recently refused a request from the US Congress to lift its exclusive patent rights to allow other drug manug´facturers to produce Tamiflu with the improbable excuse that it was in effect, too complex for others to rapidly produce.

<snip>

Tamiflu was developed and patented in 1996 by a California biotech firm, Gilead Sciences Inc. Gilead is a NASDAQ (GILD) listed stock company which prefers to maintain a low profile in the current rush to Tamiflu. That might be because of who is tied to Gilead. In 1997, before he became US Secretary of Defense, Donald H. Rumsfeld was named Chairman of the Board of Gilead Sciences, where he remained until early 2001 when he became Defense Secretary. Rumsfeld had been on the board of Gilead since 1988 according to a January 3 1997 company press release. An as-yet-unconfirmed report is that Rumsfeld while Secretary of Defense also purchased an additional stock in his former company, Gilead Sciences Inc., worth $18 million, making him one of its largest if not the largest stock owners today.

25. I have to disagree with you.
Most of Europe and Canada is prepared for this. Or as prepared as they can be with supplies of Tamiflu.

Also take into account that since Bush stepped into office, our health programs have taken a serious slide backwards. If something does happen, we're going to be in the same boat as a third world country if we don't at least meet this potential Katrina in the same way that other countries do. Just from a national security stand point, if we're the only supernation weakened by a pandemic, what does that do to our ability to protect our country from aggressors?

Unfortunately, as is the case with hurricane years that don't give us major hurricanes, it's easy to get lulled into believing we're wasting money on nothing preparing for one.

The question is, what is the government doing about finding affordable means of getting enough Tamiflu, or setting up research facilities that will work to find a vaccine once the virus manifests itself?

29. As someone who's also been reading the Health & Science Section....
I've known about Avian Flu for some time. For several years, it's been a serious concern--worldwide. But I'm disgusted that we need to listen to a "Plan" explained by an idiot who doesn't even skim the First Page for headlines on his way to the Sports Section.

Bush is ready to Send In the Troops--to enforce quarantine. But he will say nothing about building a better health care system. Too many people are without proper care as it is; how would we deal with an emergency situation? And, perhaps, we should not have to depend on his buddies in Big Pharm for all scientific research & production of vaccines. The plan will apparently cost a great deal--will he cut back in Iraq or reduce Tax Cuts? Hardly.

Your post is excellent. You're right. We shouldn't dismiss the threat the way we're doing it in this thread, but instead we should be angry about how the government is responding to it.

If it's as Bush usually operates, he's going to talk the talk, then release that money to his cronies without building infra-structure to properly prepare for this.

33. yes- perhaps a better UNIVERSAL healthcare system would be a good
response.

We can't poo-poo the threat just b/c Bush is saying it is a threat. If anything, we should rally our senators and be super-critical about Bush's response. And use this as rallying point for universal health care. I mean, imagine, poor (minority) neighborhoods quarentined in this country without adequate healthcare. That would be a nightmare- worse than Katrina!!

frightening. This is coming from Europe- where countries are already prepared. They might be trying to capitalize on it by making us fear military quarentines and such, but the reality of the threat is something Bush hasn't taken serious enough, and it is a real threat.

BS in Biology, 1988 Lebanon Valley College. Spent 4 years in environmental research until the first Bush recession killed us.

I'm not saying the threat isn't out there - I'm just saying that Bush has a way of creating monsters out of mole hills. I'm not ready to commit 6.5billion dollars for a fantasy. But I also know that I have only ever gotten 1 flu shot in my lifetime and only once have I ever come down with the flu. If people are overall healthy and have access to healthcare then they can better combat this problem IF IT IS REAL.

We come out with these maladies ever so many years to frighten people. But when we had the hard, cold, facts that AIDS was going to be an epidemic our government ignored it.

And btw, who gets this 6.5billion dollars - well gee, probably mainly pharmaceutical companies. What a great way to payback the folks that helped get Bush re-elected

In your OP, you attempted to deny that the threat even existed. That attitude is what I take exception to. The threat is real.

If you would care to read up on the 1918 flu, you will find that those with the healthiest immune systems were the most at risk. The flu provoked an over reaction of the immune system that destroyed the lungs.
