I am probably in horrible dissent to the majority view at DU on this guy. He appears to have warm blood in his veins. Read below:

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1124387,00.html

"In that case, Alito argued passionately with other members of the 3rd Circuit Appeals Court that a disabled woman, Pauline Thomas, should be granted benefits because she had been laid off from her job as an elevator operator and could not find a new job since the position of "elevator operator" had virtually disappeared from the economy. A lower court had ruled that a narrow and technical reading of the Social Security statute did not entitle Thomas to benefits. Alito called this result "absurd" and overrode the objections of several of his colleagues and convinced the full 3rd Circuit to overturn the lower court decision."

There is hope that this guy is not a corporate lawyer, unlike Miers (remember her?).
He also likes baseball and ethnic food. That's not bad either.

"Alito played a role in two high-profile abortion disputes. In 1991 he voted to uphold Pennsylvania spousal-notification requirements that were later struck down by the Supreme Court. In 2000 he joined a three-judge court in voiding a New Jersey prohibition on a late-term procedure that opponents call partial- birth abortion."

What? Voiding abortion ban?

"He struck down a Newark Police Department policy forbidding officers to wear beards after two Muslims complained that it violated their religious rights."

1. Everyone has their good points.
Thank you for finding this information. However, I feel his views on abortion, family leave, rights for minorities/workers outweigh these few times when it appears that he might have ruled the way I feel a judge should rule.

8. Alito ruled AGAINST the disabled - and against Family leave - so this
story sounds like bull shit being planted.

"ALITO WOULD ALLOW DISABILITY-BASED DISCRIMINATION: In Nathanson v. Medical College of Pennsylvania, the majority said the standard for proving disability-based discrimination articulated in Alito’s dissent was so restrictive that “few if any…cases would survive summary judgment.”

ALITO WOULD STRIKE DOWN THE FAMILY AND MEDICAL LEAVE ACT: The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) “guarantees most workers up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a loved one.” The 2003 Supreme Court ruling upholding FMLA essentially reversed a 2000 decision by Alito which found that Congress exceeded its power in passing the law. "
