Email to my local ABC affiliate re: comment that yesterday was "nasty"
Good afternoon.

While I was at home on lunch, I caught your noon news program (as I typically do). However, I was a bit stunned by the editorial remark inserted into a lead-in by Renee Murphy. The story was about the Senate going into the closed session yesterday. Renee's words were: "nasty shutdown".

Considering that Rule 21 has been invoked 53 times since 1929, according to the Congressional Research Service, I fail to see how yesterday's events could be described as "nasty". "Nasty" would refer to some of the Senators' remarks after the session ended, not the enactment of the rule itself. Unless WHAS 11 intends to describe Senate rules that have been in place for many, many years as "nasty".

In the future, I would recommend that WHAS 11 refrain from inserting editorial comments in the news without explicitly stating that it is an editorial.

Thank you.

2. What a terrific, mature letter to WHAS.
Believe me, they listen to this approach more than any other. :)

4. Expletive- and rhetoric-filled letters get ignored, I would imagine.
I always try to write letters of complaint (or praise) using my mad English skillz.

3. Way to go, Roland!
I'm writing more often, too. Tired of letting them get away with it all.

8. In addition to writing CNN yesterday about both Wolf and Dobbs
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 02:01 PM by janeaustin
calling the Senate executive session a Senate "shut down" I also wrote them about Ed Henry's report in which he said:

The "plot" was "hatched" referring to the Democrats' maneuver;

The Democrats did this because they "feel emboldened" by the Libby indictment (Nice mind reading, there, Ed.)

And something else equally colorful and slanted that I can't remember right now.

I suggested he just report the story as it happened and leave the colorful language to screenwriters.

As a former reporter for Roll Call or The Hill, he should know better.

(Edited for stupid typos.)

5. Good for you.
Off-the-cuff commenting like that by local newscasters is one of my pet peeves. But they reveal more in those few unrehearsed (or unwritten) remarks than they do in the stories themselves.

6. Good work!!!!
Always remember to insist that these slanted programming issues must stop or you cannot continue to watch. All of them are motivated by $$$$$$$$$$$$$, it's really all that matters.

9. You should have included a note saying that "nasty" is
calling the police to keep congressmen from reading the legislation just handed to them with less than a minute before voting on it . . .
