Kerry on Senate Vote to Allow Drilling in the ANWR
John Kerry on Senate Vote to Allow Drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
November 3rd, 2005

In an effort to stave off the drilling in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge today, Senators John Kerry and Maria Cantwell offered an amendment to the controversial provision of drilling by the oil companies. The amendment was defeated.

The following is statement by John Kerry on the defeat of the amendment and drilling in the Arctic Refuge:

Today the Senate failed to adopt an amendment, offered by Senators John Kerry (D-Mass.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and others, to remove a controversial provision in the budget reconciliation package to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling by oil companies. The measure to keep the current ban on drilling in ANWR failed 48-51. It is scheduled for a vote in the House of Representatives next week.

“Despite years of control in Washington, George Bush and the Republican leadership in Congress have been unable to scare up enough support for opening the Arctic Refuge to oil drilling, so they have resorted to underhanded procedural maneuvers to give a handout to big oil at the expense of our environment and our future energy security.

“It’s time this Administration acknowledged we can’t drill our way to energy independence. We have to invent our way there. Drilling in the Arctic Refuge is bad energy policy, bad for our environment, and bad for taxpayers who care about their hard-earned dollars going to corporations.

7. There is still the house vote
NRDC had an action alert last week to call three Republican congressmen to ask them to vote that down.

8. House leadership may pull ANWR from budget bill, as it lacks support...
In August, two dozen House Republicans, led by Representative Jeb Bradley of New Hampshire, signed a letter opposing use of the budget process to clear the way for oil drilling in the wildlife refuge. "Debate on opening this unique land to oil and gas exploration should be done outside the budget process, not as part of an omnibus bill," the letter said.

11. Any Kerry supporters we have here are for the...
...him maintaining his U.S. Senate seat, right?

Are there HONESTLY any people here that want to see him run again in 2008?

Can you imagine the campaign?

Continuous commercials:

"Yes, knowing what I know today I would have still voted for the war" :silly:
"Yes, knowing what I know today I would have still voted for the war" :silly:

12. If you're worried about gluten -
eat a gluten free diet.

As for the war vote - how about this scenario - Kerry actually had the cajones to offer a plan to get out Iraq. To date I haven't heard one from anyone else.

15. Gluten free.. LOL
Too bad Kerry didn't have those cajones just a leeeeeeetle bit sooner. Like --- say --- ---14 months ago?

I supported him to the bitter end after he became our candidate. I was even a moderator at his official campaign site and was soooo proud of working there with a great gang!

But no. As much as I respect him for many, many things -- no way Democrats would hand the Rethugs a candidate with a bullseye on his forehead.

To this day, he still supports the decision to go to war.

No low carbs for me.. ;)

But knowing what he knows now.... he would have STILL voted to give the dipwads authority !!!

Can you imagine the campaign treasure that alone would be for Rethugs? http://eliteleague.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/duh!.gif

18. Larissa, you know better
1/ Kerry never supported the decision to go to war. He said so as early as March 2003, that is when Bush went to war.

2/ During a speech two weeks ago, he said his vote for the IWR was wrong and that he would not have done it again if he had known the facts.

So, support him, dont support him. Fine (anyway there is still 06 to come), but dont say things that are not correct.

19. He would have never gone to war were he president..
And if he FINALLY said that knowing what he knows today, he would have not given Bush authority---

---then I stand corrected.

He's had a terrible problem of being clear on his position in my opinion. :banghead:

Enough from me on this subject too.. I'm all for DU'ers supporting whoever they see fit.

23. Georgetown speech, 10/26. It was ALL OVER DU.
What is not clear?

Let's be straight about Iraq. Saddam Hussein was a brutal dictator who
deserves his own special place in hell. But that was not the reason
America went to war.

The country and the Congress were misled into war. I regret that we were
not given the truth; as I said more than a year ago, knowing what we
know now, I would not have gone to war in Iraq. And knowing now the full
measure of the Bush Administration's duplicity and incompetence, I doubt
there are many members of Congress who would give them the authority
they abused so badly. I know I would not.
The truth is, if the Bush
Administration had come to the United States Senate and acknowledged
there was no "slam dunk case" that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass
destruction, acknowledged that Iraq was not connected to 9/11, there
never would have even been a vote to authorize the use of force -- just
as there's no vote today to invade North Korea, Iran, Cuba, or a host of
regimes we rightfully despise.

I understand that as much as we might wish it, we can't rewind the tape
of history. There is, as Robert Kennedy once said, 'enough blame to go
around,' and I accept my share of the responsibility.
But the mistakes
of the past, no matter who made them, are no justification for marching
ahead into a future of miscalculations and misjudgments and the loss of
American lives with no end in sight. We each have a responsibility, to
our country and our conscience, to be honest about where we should go
from here. It is time for those of us who believe in a better course to
say so plainly and unequivocally.

25. Kerry versus Kerry - a little confused on the war
Edited on Sat Nov-05-05 02:11 AM by welshTerrier2
he gave the best evidence for immediate withdrawal anyone could have given ... if he knew then how incompetent bush was, he would never have supported giving bush the authority to go to war ...

and yet, Kerry won't call for withdrawal ... does he think that bush has suddenly become competent enough to prosecute the war???

the best argument against Kerry's latest position is his previous position ...

so which of his positions should we support? the one where bush is too incompetent to wage this war or the one where we should remain in Iraq for 12 - 15 months or more while bush keeps trying ???

27. People evolved you know. Except *, of course
Some people try to solve the problem. Other just behave like 3 year old.

Thanksfully our two senators do belong to the first category. Too bad if some are so entrenched in their positions that they have to hijack a perfectly reasonnable thread about an important subject (that is ANWR, not Kerry).

Where are you in the other thread relative to ANWR (Oh, that's true, nowhere).

you're addressing the wrong poster ... and your hypocrisy defies belief ...

I notice that you didn't object when another poster first raised the issue about Kerry's positionon the war ... instead of objecting, you yourself decided to engage in a discussion about it ...

but i'll tell you what, i'll be glad to post a poll on this later in a separate thread to see which of Kerry's positions on the war others prefer ...

28. the same one he's always had
The one where we shouldn't have gone but since we did he sure wishes Bush would get it right, and tells him how over and over and over, so our troops can come home. How hard is that to grasp?

maybe you were too busy moderating to pay attention to what he was saying.

Of course I was a moderator for the official campaign site too - and a writer for blog - I heard him speaking up - yup he sure had some cajones during the campaign.

Funny how come I noticed and you didn't?

..that's kewl.. :silly:

If he recently clarified his position -- like I said -- I stand corrected -- I honestly didn't know he said he wouldn't have voted for authority.

Awesome you were a moderator there too! It was a blast.. BUSY - BUSY - BUSY -- but a blast!!

Who knew.. we could've even talked to each other in the moderator's section of that forum?

Anyway.. we disagree on '08 possibilities, but I'm sure we'll be standing together once again with whoever ultimately becomes our candidate.

26. I'm not even thinking about
08! Trying to get past 05 and 06 first.

It's always good to try to be in the moment I think - not get too far ahead or stuck in the past.

Besides there's far too much happening in the NOW to think that far in advance.

13. I take offense to this
WT2

I frequently write about the environment and post what I write here. Not all my environment threads are Kerry orientated.

As a matter of fact I post a lot of stuff here that has absolutely nothing to do with Kerry.

I find it very offensive that you would insinuate this in my thread.

I don't go looking for threads by you and post nasty comments, but you always show up on my threads with nasty comments.
