Fucking asshole, isn't he?
Jerry Doyle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Jerry Doyle (born 16 July, 1956 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American actor best known for his role as Michael Garibaldi on the 1990s science fiction television series Babylon 5. His other science fiction acting credits include Sliders and Gangster World.
Previously a corporate jet pilot and a stockbroker, Doyle made an abrupt career change into acting in 1991, and Babylon 5 was his first significant role. In 2000, Doyle unsuccessfully ran for the United States House of Representatives in California's 24th Congressional district (Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, to the northwest of Los Angeles), as a Republican. He later severed his ties with the party, and now declares himself an independent.
Doyle is the ex-husband of actress Andrea Thompson who played the role of telepath Talia Winters in the first two seasons of Babylon 5.
Doyle is now a talk radio host on several networks nationwide, discussing politics, current events, and popular culture. On his radio show he coined the phrase "Grapefruit Mentality" referring to the public's fascination with issues and celebrities that don't really matter. He currently resides in Las Vegas, Nevada with his fiancée.

For those of you who remember Babylon 5, President Clark was the head of the Earth Alliance (who built Babylon 5); he killed a previous president with the help of the Shadows. He then set up a dictatorship complete with secret police (Nightwatch, Psi-Corps) and also sent Earthforce against rebel populations. The current U.S. president's behaviour sounds similar to that of Clark's except there's no breakaway force of millitary people willing to fight Bush and unseat him.
So, does anyone think that Bush & Clark were 'seperated at birth'?

Bruce Boxleitner went to the White House a few years ago with his wife, SAG president Melissa Gilbert. Karl Rove came out of his bunker, especially keen to meet Bruce, gushed how Bab 5 was one of his favorite shows and that GWB loved it, too.
Boxleitner relayed this info to J. Michael Straczynski, who was so depressed we said he slept for about three days.
By the way, I found out about Smirking Chimp from a freind who saw a recommendation for it on JMS's website.

While JMS, the creator of Babylon 5 was always coy about his exact political self-identification, from his wonderful television sci-fi drama, and his personal writings/observations, I've gleaned that he is somewhat left-of-center and most certainly hostile towards any form of politics that's as far to the right as the modern American neoconservatism currently is.
It's known by B5 fans that Bruce Boxlietner and Jerry Doyle, who played Captain Sheridan and Chief Garibaldi respectively, were very much self-identified conservative Republicans. But this never affected the working relationship between the actors and the shows creator/writer, JMS.
'MissMarple' is usually a wonderful contributor to SmirkingChimp, but I'd have to step in and apologize. Babylon 5 is loaded with very serious themes of government and society... even terrorism and the police state. I see Clark as Cheney. For me, Bush is just the shill, like Morden. A puppet.
Babylon 5 is a wonderful series, not just as a sci-fi show, but as a television show. It's involving because it has much character development, often good dialog, acting, drama, grand themes of good, 'grey', and evil. Most importantly, it is structured with a beginning. middle, and end. Most television shows are formatted in a standard and progress so long as there is a sizable viewership. JMS re-invented the episodic epic for television.
I gotta dust off my old B5 video tapes! Fond memories!
