Spy story that has enmeshed Bush: Sunday Times
GOOD background feature on the Italian job...

Michael Smith

THERE was no hint in the few small pieces of intelligence that came into the MI6 headquarters at Vauxhall Cross, London, in February 1999 of what was to follow. There was certainly no indication that nearly seven years later they might rock America.

By last week, however, the fallout from that intelligence had caused a senior White House aide, Lewis “Scooter” Libby, to be indicted on charges of perjury over the naming of a CIA officer.

Speculation mounted that two of the most powerful figures in Washington — Dick Cheney, the vice-president, and Karl Rove, political adviser to President George W Bush — would also be implicated in the scandal.

This is no Watergate or Lewinsky affair. It is a relatively arcane matter reflecting the mutual contempt of the vice-president and the CIA. But because it feeds on the increasingly bitter debate about the war in Iraq, it threatens the authority of an increasingly lame-duck second-term president.

1. 'relatively arcane matter'
A regime committed lies fraud and deception to take the nation to war on false pretenses, the war is a disaster, and high ranking members of the regime took vindictive actions to suppress dissent against their actions both before and immediately after the war was started. The specific case resulted in the revelation of a CIA agent's covert status and the destruction of a CIA covert operation that was working in the area of weapons of mass destruction proliferation.

No of course this does not rank up there with the break-in to the DNC headquarters by Nixon's thugs, or Ms. Lewinsky's precious presidential semen stain. Its 'arcane'. Got it.

Whore.

2. Michael Smith is ignorant or complicit
Leak-enabler Judith Miller of the NY Times was instrumental in selling this war.

3. The way I read it, they're not saying it doesn't rank up there...
...in seriousness with Watergate and Lewinsky, but that being a far more complex matter to get to the heart of, it's not as easily understood by the sheeple as those two incidents were.

They understand the level of its seriousness: "...it threatens the authority of an increasingly lame-duck second-term president." So on that level, it's certainly on the same level of Watergate and Lewinsky.

6. Bear in mind who owns that newspaper.
The Sunday Times is owned by Rupert Murdoch, News Corp.

News Corp. controls top U.S. satellite TV service DirecTV Group Inc. News Corp. also owns 20th Century Fox movie studios, the Fox News Channel and the New York Post newspaper, as well as large publisher HarperMorrow. It also owns the influential neocon magazine, The Weekly Standard, as well as minority stakes in two professional sports teams. It has a huge presence in Australia.

Columbia Journalism Review has a FANTASTICALLY useful tool that unravels mega media ownership, mega corporation by mega corporation. Easy to use.
