Under fire from Democrats, Cheney pushes back
Tue Nov 8, 2005 08:31 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - With Vice President Dick Cheney under mounting fire, his office together with the White House and the Republican Party responded with a coordinated counter-attack on Tuesday, accusing Sen. Harry Reid of malicious conduct "unbecoming" his role as Democratic leader.

The White House response -- unusual in its hostile tone and coordination -- was sparked by Reid's charges that Cheney manipulated pre-war intelligence about Iraq and was "behind" the leaking of classified information to discredit White House critics. Cheney's long-time chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, was indicted last month for obstructing justice, perjury and lying after a two-year investigation into the leak of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity.

(clip)

The counter-attack against Reid may be a sign that the White House is planning a more aggressive campaign against its critics as polls show Bush's approval ratings at all-time lows. "There's a dark cloud hanging over the White House. It's really a storm cloud. The vice president, who gets his authority from the president, sadly is in the middle of that storm," Reid told reporters.

(clip)

Within minutes of each other, White House spokesman Scott McClellan, counsel to the vice president Steve Schmidt and the Republican National Committee all issued responses bashing Reid. McClellan decried Reid's "rants" as "unbecoming of a leader of any party," and said Americans would question "whether Democrats are more concerned about the peoples' priorities or scoring political points at the expense of a dedicated public servant." Schmidt called Reid's comments "unconscionable personal attacks and malicious," adding: "These are beneath the office of the Democratic leader." Brian Jones, the RNC's communications director, said Reid's comments were "vicious" and accused him of spinning a "far-flung conspiracy theory."

Edited on Tue Nov-08-05 09:57 PM by rateyes
Tell me how I can get "down in the mud" with you...Cheney can't refute the message without getting deeper in trouble, so all he can do is attack the messenger....Ain't nobody dirtier than Cheney---for the White House to say Reid's actions were "unbecoming" is like Rush Limbaugh calling Bill Clinton a drug addict.

4. But it's ok for Frist rant about Dems...
"They have no convictions, they have no principles, they have no ideas."

Now that's unbecoming of a leader. He insulted ALL democrats, including me and I'm deeply offended. That's an "unconscionable personal attack" to every Democrat.

NFW, Scottie. Go back to your "on-going investigation" hole, you little rat.

9. They just got the Blowback from their Holier than Thou attitude, in
NJ and VA. Please DICK add coals to the fire, there is no WAR or ENEMY you can create to SCARE us anymore!

So, please Dick, "Go Chaney yourself!".

Oh, and I think it is time to bring up the Halliburton, KBR etc., contracts again, it would be a good contrast to the Philly (no Pay to Play campaign, (No bid contracts, sound familiar!), oh, crap forgot to look at the DA race results!)

16. IT'S TIME FOR US TO SEND REID LOTS OF SUPPORT!!!!
We need to tell him we APPROVE of his message, and that we're behind him 100%.

Be sure and remind him that bush/cheney's approval ratings are in the 20's and 30's, and that they can "bash" all they want to, and it won't make them innocent.

19. OK, Dick, time to play "The Most Dangerous Game"
...except this time, it's YOU who gets to be the naked prey!

(This is a reference to what I've seen on a couple of websites: they claimed that out west, Cheney used to get together with friends to play "The Most Dangerous Game". This is a "game" in which men hunt a woman who is naked, in the wild. Though I despise Cheney, these stories were just too "out there" even for me to believe. But then again, he IS Lynn Cheney's husband...)

25. conspiracy theory? maybe. but "far-flung"?? ich don't tink zo!
"conspiracy theory" is obviously being used to discredit it, but technically, yes, it's a theory and yes, we think cheney and the entire white house iraq group, at a minimum, conspired.

but "far-flung"? how far-flung is it to think cheney and libby spoke? they talk to each other every day! "far-flung" is when you tie cheney to the white house janitor to a masseuse in chechnya to osama bin laden's 3rd cousin once removed. now THAT's far-flung.

...I don't know if it would be funny or just unwise (I'm thinking hilarious), but that would make a great lunatic conspiracy theory website, but yes, it probably would help to "muddy the waters." :evilfrown:

32. So basically, Bush and Cheney have lost control of the White House
and underlings with names like Scooter are running the show. That's what I get from all this.

Oh my, if I had voted for Mr Cheney and Mr. Bush, I would be very, very upset with their incompetence right about now.

them anymore. Rove is off his game.

I'm sure this doesn't surprise any of us.

I suspect it was Rove's idea to give the "ETHICS REFRESHER" course. What a joke.....as if that will somehow make the public feel better.

Bushco is going down and they are getting desperate!!
