On Long Island, Democrats Run Wild (MAJOR UPSETS)
How good a night was it for Democrats on Long Island?

Dennis Dillan, the 31-year reigning Nassau County District Attorney most known for his strick anti-abortion views, was ousted by newcomer Kathleen Rice.

County Executive Tom Suozzi, a rising Democratic star, gave more juice to his hinted-at campaign for governor by trouncing his GOP opponent Gregory Peterson by 20 points.

The Democrats held their lead in the Legislature in Nassau.

In Suffolk, the Democrats regained control of the legislature for the first time since 1976.

Now, for the first time in over 100 years, the Democrats control both the Nassau and Suffolk county executive seats, and both legislatures.

This is historic. This island, my island, used to be THE stronghold of the Northeast GOP. This is where Nixon campaigned to start his presidential run. This is where the heart of the Republican party existed in the State of New York for decades.

Now it is completely destroyed.

Tonight is a good night to be a Democrat on Long Island.

:)

2. Almost every Suburban county in the Northeast is going Democrat
It has been happening since Clinton won in 1992. Most major NYC suburban counties in the Tri-State area have been voting Democratic at the Presidential level since 1992 or 1996, and only now are starting to turn over at the local level. I think the reason is that liberal New Yorkers are moving out to these counties, and many moderate Republicans are getting disgusted with the rightward move by the National Republican Part.

What happened in the city? Ferrarro ran such a stupid campaign and he's such a bad candidate. Corzine ran a smart campaign - he linked Forrester to Bush constantly.

6. the problem with running in NYC is
Unless the city is basically in chaos, voters aren't going to toss the incumbant out.

Bloomberg is seen as (at worst) harmless. Ferrer was seen as a career insider who just got the nomination because it was his turn and his time.

Personally, I think Anthony Wiener would have been a better candidate, but that's just me.

Ferrarro is a TERRIBLE candidate but I don't know if Bill Clinton could win against that much money. Well, Bill could win. But I can't think of anybody else.

New Yorkers would have gone bananas over having Bill in that office!

And, it goes without saying....he would have been really good at it, too!

I hate that fucker King.

A while ago a DUer posted a nasty exchange he had with King, who was worshipfully propping up Bush and being VERY derogatory to this DUer constituent.

Republicans are being beaten back in upstate as well. Good news out of Ulster County (i.e. Catskills) on a similar level, etc.

Now it's on to state Senate seats. And booting that clown/whacko Peter King, whose reelections probably depended on the Nassau County Republican machinery to some substantial degree.

I lived in Brookhaven for a time in the Seventies. Dismal, and more so for the locals. Everything seemed run down or deteriorating and without a future and hopelessly depressed and unwilling and corrupt. Fire Island was the only good place to escape to within easy driving range. It's good to see/hear that things have turned around.

Dems are going to control all of NY State in a BIG way after '06. A BIG way!

After we get the gov's mansion AND the State Senate Senate next year, it's time for NY to redistrict and take back some of those seats DeLay stole through redistricting in TX.
