more fun(damentalism) with texas....
Local referendum/White Settlement name change (100%): Yes 219 (8%); No 2,388 (92%). Would have changed the city's name from White Settlement to West Settlement. The name arose in the 1840s, after the city was populated by white settlers in an area surrounded by Indian tribes. Opponents said the history and heritage of White Settlement would be lost in a name change. Supporters said a renaming would have brought more business to the city and helped it avoid racial connotations.

1. I'd rather the fine people of 'Cut and Shoot' vote for change.
Seriously, White Settlement Texas is no more offensive than White Plains New York.

3. i disagree......
...whenever the right wing uses the words heritage and history, it's code for racism.

and the fact that the voters would choose that phony "heritage and history" over better economic opportunities just goes to further prove that these idiot right wingers will vote against their economic interests in favor of bigotry time and time again.

btw, i don't know the origin of the name of white plains, NY....i figured it had something to do with snow. is that not the case?

5. here ya go.......
we're talking about the history and heritage of the name of "white settlement, not the color of snow or socks.

The City of White Settlement's web site explains exactly what that history is:
"This historical chain of events led to the development of two settlements, one occupied by white settlers and another encompassing a grouping of seven villages occupied by Native Americans. Thus, the name White Settlement was coined. The City of White Settlement was officially incorporated in 1941 and has enjoyed a steady increase in population and development ever since."http://www.ci.white-settlement.tx.us/

so in other words, the name "white settlement" is a celebration of the segregated nature of the town.

damn that rosa parks for ruining the fun.

6. Sounds more like a plain old fact than a celebration.
I doubt that everyone in White Settlement who voted not to change is a racist. Perhaps some of them just didn't want to change. It was put to a vote, what more can one ask.

Tell you what, if I lived in Looneyville, Texas, I'd definitely vote to change.

7. well, if i lived in "white settlement" and it was apparent that.....
...my town was losing economic opportunities because of the name, you can bet i'd vote to change the name.

but then, i'd never live in a place called white settlement.

it would be interesting to know if any non-whites live there.

2. Well, that's good news for
towns named NiggerHang . . .

Okay, okay. It's fictional. (That's why I didn't put a state). But it's not too far out an idea since a lot of places want to keep the symbol of the Confederacy flying . . .

8. It worked for "Front Royal" Virginia
Front Royal was originally named Hell Town, but eventually people got all uptight about their image and changed the name.

Of course, that's all that changed. It's still a hellish town, but now you have to live there to find that out (I was there for five loooong years and I'm glad I'm somewhere else now).
