Kerry-led Committee Helps Elect Democrats Across the Country
Kerry-led Committee Helps Elect Democrats Across the Country
November 9th, 2005

Democrats Win Both Governors Races and Critical Local Races, Defeat California’s Proposition 75

Heading into the 2006 election cycle, yesterday we saw a strong showing for 2005 candidates supported by John Kerry’s PAC - Keeping America’s Promise.

Washington, D.C. – John Kerry congratulated Democrats Jon Corzine and Tim Kaine for their victories in the New Jersey and Virginia Governors races and other Democratic candidates who won across the country last night, complimented California on defeating Prop. 75 and spoke of the importance of Democrats’ strong showing in the 2005 elections.

“This president came to power saying he wanted to unite us and not divide us, and has done just the opposite,” Kerry said. “Monday night, on the way home from a failed diplomatic trip to South America, President Bush stopped in Richmond in a last ditch effort to energize the Republican base by campaigning for one of the most insulting, vituperative and nasty gubernatorial candidates this country has seen, a candidate right out of the Rove playbook, and his political results were no better than his diplomatic results. From Virginia to California, from Maine to Minnesota, people spoke up for a more inclusive politics yesterday and against the efforts of those who would use hot button issues and even hotter television ads to divide us. If I were a Republican, I would be concerned that the results of last year are just that and not a guide to the future.”

1. Well last night it was DEAN and the 50 state strategy.
Edited on Wed Nov-09-05 12:40 PM by xultar
So...Who was it really?

I don't think it was either of them.

I think it was the VOTERS. They are waking up and they are PISSED.

coordinated national strategy to build the Democratic Party from the grassroots up. This will have effect in some places now, we can only hope that it will have an effect in others as time goes on.

The effort to build up the grassroots should be welcome as should whoever wants to put time and money into it. We need this. We need to have a big effort to put a Dem message out and get it to the voters. We can all work together on some things, as they are good for the whole Democratic PArty.

4. It was both (at least from what I saw locally)
Our assembly candidates, who were great but lost (in a very Rpublican area) were DFA. I also know personally 3 people who volunteered in my area, motivated by Kerry's effort. (I knew only a small number of the volunteers) I also know many of the local people came into politics because Dean motivated them.

I think the rallies that B. Clinton, Kerry, Obama and Dean had did get people excited and interested. The canned phone calls were good. I rarely compliment Hillary, but her phone call, that in it's first sentence mentioned the number of NJ Supreme Court judges would be appointed by the governor and that Forrester is pro-life. There was concern that woman might not vote for Corzine because of the ex-wife stuff.

Also, Corzine himself was the biggest factor in the election. His experience did impress people.

I support Kerry, but I really wish he would have simply celebrated the win, talked about the improved party and mentioned his own role in a more low key manner. He really helped as did others.

7. I thought he did.
We need more English majors. Hmmm, was it the indirect phrase? It reads:

Kerry-led Committee Helps Elect Democrats Across the Country.

Okay, how about changing it to:

Committee led by Kerry Helps Elect Democrats Across the Country.

That sounds like what he did. Pure and simple.

by itself.

It would have been better if they had published Kerry's statement only, IMHO (no reason to make a big deal of it either).

10. You're right Kerry's statement is fine,
Even the PAC statement was ok - it did say helped and they did. When reading it initially the combination of the title and the PAC statement seemed to overstate - so my fault for not reading more carefully.

all over the place campaigning for these candidates. And, Dean's organizing the grass-roots efforts deserves credit too.

that protected Bush and the GOP for 6 years.

The American people are finally waking up to the media lie that Bush was a strong leader.

Kerry, Dean, pissed off voters, people knocking on doors, etc.

Everybody doing their part, you know?

It's not a mutually exclusive either/or thing.

appearances in NJ for Corzine in early September. There was no kicking and screaming or late appearances. Talk about propaganda.

Guess you missed the DU threads from DUers who attended those speeches at the time.

And Corzine joined with Kerry on his DSM letter, too, last June.

They have always helped each other over the years. The original post may have overstated credit, but the truth is Kerry was a solid help to Corzine.

20. I understand. During the primaries we had alot of GOP operatives here at
DU keeping the divisiveness heated for even the smallest comment. Some of them got outed right away and some lasted through to election night before they outed themselves.

Sad, but, you really have to be careful when vitriol is directed at ANY of the Dems. GOPs have been pulling this hitDemsfromtheleft crap for 4 decades now.

15. Absolutely Not True - Kerry was the FIRST one to come (to my knowledge)
Edited on Wed Nov-09-05 02:33 PM by karynnj
He went to Paramus, Wayne, Morristown, Edison and the Priceton area in early September. Even earlier than that he had used his email list to help recruit people to volunteer in late Aug and again later.

Please do not spread lies - especially when there were many reports about the visits. I went to the Morristown one in the heart of a Republican county where he brought out over 500 - 600 people. 460 actually signed with phone numbers and email addresses - for the county Democrats to use. I volunteered after reading Kerry's email - and I was not alone.

You are not in NJ - what is your basis or agenda for saying this? I can not even IMAGINE commenting that Dean did nothing in CA, because I have no knowledge of what he did. (I assume he or people he assigned did a lot.) Kerry made an attempt to which he gave both his time and energy and money from his PAC - why don't you want him to help. I think YOU need to consider why you posted what you did.

24. Kerry also played a part, albeit not as large as the DNC effort,
in regards to money, but Kerry has been campaigning and providing money and endorsements for mostly all those who won last night. Dean also played a role. No one is trying to diminish Dean's influence. I personally give to Dean's grass roots effort(which by the way, Kerry also raised money for) and Kerry's PAC.

I think he said more than folks realize, is all.

I just wish he'd have gotten himself worked up sooner in the campaign. Sept and Oct didn't leave enough time for the momentum thing.

Of course the Bin Laden tape didn't help matters, but there you have it.

But I think I'm wrong. I think that at least 50% of the American people were really just that dense on election day that they didn't get it in their heads what is going on. Now they get it. And a lot more...

Wonderful to see our Dem leaders uniting for '05 (WINNERS!!!) and '06 candidates.

While I'm gushing, thanks for all you do.
