New Orleans to host 2008 Dem Convention??
On the front page of today's Times-Picayune and a great big thanks to Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings for making the suggestion. The chosen city is expected to be announced sometime after the 2006 elections.

Republicans are also eyeing NOLA for their convention. If the city gets both conventions that would be quite an economic boost.

2. That's a brilliant idea.
And it would serve the Republicans right for their grandstanding at Ground Zero.

3. republicans
The Republicans should really be holding their convention there, as they, too appear to be all washed up.

7. lampoon
You really could come up with a fantastic lampoon convention; putting fat cats up at the Superdome, having Bar work the crowd inside. . . it would be fun.

5. We should not SUGGEST we should DEMAND NOLA for 2008
Edited on Wed Nov-09-05 01:24 PM by ...of J.Temperance
New Orleans BELONGS to us, despite what all the mediawhores are saying NOLA will STILL be a Democratic city.

Howard Dean had better come through and pick The Crescent City for 2008. I DON'T want the Repukes there, let them go someplace else for their 2008 Fascist Festival...Munich perhaps would be a good choice for them.

I think considering Jindal is babbling about the Repukes having their convention in NOLA too, the DNC need to head the pigs off at the pass and pick NOLA very soon into 2006.

On Edit: Bobby Jindal needs to shut his whiney little mouth.

New Orleans 2008

The wind had barely stopped blowing before Katrina and the storm's aftermath had become the latest front in the nation's political/cultural war. Bush critics are already undermining their own cause with overreaching, as they denounce the president as a racist for his alleged unconcern about the suffering of so many black people in New Orleans. But an administration whose FEMA director knew less about on-the-ground conditions in the stricken city this week than the average TV viewer has a real vulnerability.

It will only address that vulnerability with a performance in coming days and weeks that is more in keeping with the GOP's image as the "daddy party," the party of competence, the party that can be trusted in times of crisis. That is the main thing. But symbolism will matter too. No single step would go further to dramatize the GOP's commitment to rebuilding New Orleans than announcing now that the party's 2008 convention will be held in the recovering city. Such a move would signal the party's confidence in the Big Easy's renewal, and put it at the forefront of what should be similar commitments from private actors to do their part to help New Orleans come back.

Critics will call it a transparent attempt to burnish the party's image after the Bush administration "failed" with the initial relief effort. The gesture would, however, reflect the genuine sentiment of Republicans who, like all Americans, want to help a city facing such a bleak future. We heard similar complaints — easily brushed off — about the Republicans' coming to New York for last year's convention.

No doubt there will be logistical problems. There were logistical problems putting on big events in New Orleans even in the best of times. But the Republicans held their convention there in 1988, and should return 20 years later. They will go to a city that then will, no doubt, still be scarred by the catastrophe of the last week, but back on its feet, and a perfect venue for a testament to the American spirit.

20. THIS isn't EVEN happening...the Repukes can FORGET about it
Edited on Wed Nov-09-05 02:17 PM by ...of J.Temperance
The Crescent City has never been theirs, they've ALWAYS hated it AND what it's stood for. So we need to tell them to fuck off and then tell them to fuck off twice and go and fuck their Mother's.

On Edit: Damn apostrophes.

10. Lil bobby jindal
since the hurricane he has become quite the liberal, helping human beings and care about people, its been a site to see and hear. Several years ago the little prick said he wasn't a career politician. He's been in politics all his life. After blanco kicked his ass in the Governor's race he sought out the next election he could find. He's a right wing corporate whore and I must say he represents his district well. They are think they are conservative; they just don't know why.

I wonder if it is enough for the racist element to vote FOR him this time.

22. The answer to your question is
No. Actually the racist element would probably vote AGAINST Jindal even more now.

Bizarrely, in 2003 Jindal did manage to win Livingston Parish by about 4,500 votes. That's always baffled me how that happened. He only won 12 parishes and 3 of those I think we can definately flip to our side.

18. Jindal wouldn't win statewide
Edited on Wed Nov-09-05 02:23 PM by ...of J.Temperance
I'm still convinced of this, despite a smaller NOLA population. Kathleen Blanco won in areas that she wasn't supposed to win in and Jindal's vote in Parishes such as Ouachita and East Baton Rouge was lower than Terrell's was, he also did very poorly in Northern Louisiana.

He's a jumped up little runt, who thinks he's a big shot, talks TOO fast and has gone as far as he's EVER going to go.

What's he going to run for? Surely not against Blanco again and Senator Landrieu would kick his whiney ass all around the state.

Maybe he'll change his name to Bobby Jindeau...or Bobby Jindeaux...YEP, THAT'S the ticket!

:sarcasm:

21. He couldn't believe
Blanco took him to the woodshed. She was actually campaigning and talking bad about me and everything. I have a great deal of respect for both Blanco and Landrieu. I sure as hell wouldn't want to run against either one of them.

Is suzy terrell pure evil or what?

I think Mary's baby brother Mitch may have a shot at the governorship but Blanco says she's going to run again. He can just hang out as LGOV and build on a very good record pro-state record. His post hurricane actions have been well received by most Louisianians.

My heads in Mississippi, but my hearts in Louisiana.

25. You want to know how evil Terrell is?
Somebody from her stupid campaign called my Grandmother AT HOME at least six times asking her to vote for Terrell...some pigshit called Mike Lambert or Mark Lambert, it was something M Lambert.

My Grandmother's been voting Democratic since she was first able to vote in the 1930s and the Terrell idiots call her up and ask her to vote for Terrell AFTER she's TOLD them five times already that she's a Democrat.

Anyhow, Suzy Terrell's political career is over, thanks to Senator Landrieu and A-G Foti.

Governor Blanco ran a very good campaign, and I was really surprised that she was as tough as she was, because she's always seemed...just quiet and NICE. Yet she turned into this Rottweiller.

Senator Landrieu's got the gut instinct of a street fighter, whoever runs against her I pity them, because she'll slice and dice them every which way.

There's a weird rumor that Mitch is going to run for NOLA Mayor, but I don't believe it, he's in a nice position to run for Governor, why would he swap Lt. Governor for Mayor? Mitch was actually out there rescuing people from rooftops...now THAT'S a HERO!

I hope Eddie Sapir runs for Mayor, I can't stand Ray Nagin, never have.

I'm back in England right now...so my heads here, but my hearts always in Louisiana. I think I'm going back in February, so I can't wait.

11. Great point
but if both parties choose the city that shouldn't be an issue. Its quite a shame that bush's actions have fucked up so many wonderful things that could happen in this country.

12. I'm not averse to it on the face of it
But it kind of uses the situation and people as a backdrop, and rest assured it will be the first talking point out of the RNC.

15. Nope, NYC was an exploited backdrop
for the Bushies "War,Fear,Terror,Guns and God" agenda, not to mention the convenience of having 35,000+ police officers to protect them from the terrorist peace rally and march

NOLA would be a perfect place for the Edwards/Warner {{{shameless giggles}}} ticket to rally :)

A stunt? You betcha, and it would actually help the community rebuild!!!!!

23. Not overly thrilled with this....first, it seems so obviously
like "political pandering"...
Also, if NOLA is one big corrupt mess of the mayor and all that rebuilding....I don't think we should risk it.

You know that it will be pinned on all Democrats sitting in that Convention hall...

I'd rather see it in Denver, in the West where we can bolster things there (here for me sort of in the SW)

24. The Mayor of New Orleans is not corrupt
And New Orleans needs convention business more than Denver needs it. It would be a helping hand to those who need it. New Orleans lives and breathes convention business. As long as dobson lives in Colorado I'd say no to Denver.

26. Even if the Dems buy building materials instead of
confetti and balloons? Think about how we can help the economy! Yay!!!! You speaketh RW talking points, which is a good thing, the citizens of NOLA won't be on the losing end, that's for sure :hi: So we must be able to deflect freeperish chatter. GOP/NYC was exploitation, they didn't NEED the money, jobs and convention publicity!

I think that's a great idea. I'd love for the Big Easy to host the convention. Wouldn't it be great to see the Big Dog strolling down Bourbon Street capturing the hearts of the masses. Howard Dean spanking FEMA from the dais in the Super Dome.
