Intelligent Design Slate Loses in Pennsylvania

Link to New York Times Article:

All eight members up for re-election to the Pennsylvania school board that had been sued for introducing the teaching of intelligent design as an alternative to evolution in biology class were swept out of office yesterday by a slate of challengers who campaigned against the intelligent design policy.

Among the losing incumbents on the Dover, Pa., board were two members who testified in favor of the intelligent design policy at a recently concluded federal trial on the Dover policy: the chairwoman, Sheila Harkins, and Alan Bonsell.

The election results were a repudiation of the first school district in the nation to order the introduction of intelligent design in a science class curriculum. The policy was the subject of a trial in Federal District Court that ended last Friday. A verdict by Judge John E. Jones III is expected by early January.

"I think voters were tired of the trial, they were tired of intelligent design, they were tired of everything that this school board brought about," said Bernadette Reinking, who was among the winners.

Edited for brevity --

2. Kansas and Texas
The culture war is alive and well. Outright bigotry won big in Texas and religious idiocy triumphed in Kansas.

The storm clouds are gathering. We are dealing with people who have lost their grip on reality. They are not going to back down and allow secular society to rule.

3. but ID is STILL going to be taught - just not in science class -- see

Many of us have celebrated the ousting of all the pro-Intelligent Design school board members in Dover, Pennsylvania. However, overlooked in all of this is the fact that the replacement board members do not oppose teaching Intelligent Design in schools. In fact, they support it, with one very important and key caveat:

It should be noted that the incoming board members from the Dover CARES campaign have a platform plank saying that "intelligent design" will be taught in Dover public schools. However, the venue of such instruction will not be the science classrooms, where it was out-of-place, but rather an elective course on comparative religion, where it fits perfectly.

STILL AN INTERESTING "INCREMENTAL" POLICY VICTORY???? YOU BE THE JUDGE

5. Doesn't bother me -- as long as it is not "confused" and "conflated" with
"science."

I really don't see how one can study Western Literature without a "Literary" knowledge of the Bible - or how one can seriously learn history without some knowledge of Old Testament, New Testament, and the Koran (as statements of philosophy - not science).

4. It doesn't matter. Creationism will reach the SCOTUS and become national
law. Thank Roberts and whoever else Bush slips in.

6. I would take the opposite tack-
how can you appreciate Galileo or Copernicus without knowing what the official Church "party line" was.

7. I agree- they should teach that the church recently apologized at
Galileo-- not TO him, but at him. Not a real apology, and meaningless so late in the game.

They can also teach that the church is hiding what it did during WW2. Hot potato!

8. And unfortunately, this is about all we'll have left.
Think it can't happen? It's happening.
