The writer of the letter titled “Show some respect for pro-life advocates,” published Nov. 7, asks pro-choice advocates to not scorn his beliefs.
In my experience, I've met two kinds of anti-abortion advocates: the militant zealots and moderates.
The former remind me of the Pharisees, who dragged the female prostitute before Jesus to test his knowledge of Mosaic Law. Unfortunately for them, Jesus noticed that they didn't drag the prostitute's clientele before him as well. That same misogynist mentality is displayed by the modern-day Pharisees in the militant anti-abortion groups. I never see them exerting the same fervor of conviction against men who get the woman seeking abortion pregnant, nor against men who prey upon children, nor against men who abuse their spouses and children. Their wrath is always directed against women seeking abortion and supporters of women's reproductive rights.
In contrast to the militants, moderate anti-abortionists have a broader social conscience. Like pro-choice advocates, they understand that improving the social and economic situations of women and their families often leads to a humane decrease in unwanted pregnancies and therefore abortions.
I have a couple questions for anti-abortionists who believe that life begins at conception. According to current fetal science, nearly two-thirds of all conceptions are terminated naturally. Is your God wasteful or monstrous?
If life begins at conception and Christians believe that a person must be baptized before dying to enter Heaven, how does God expect that microscopic fertilized egg to be baptized before he aborts it? I intentionally was provocative in the last 2 paragraphs. It will be interesting what responses I'll get from the anti-abortion advocates. The last time I did this in another newspaper the response was that "God causes miscarriages. He does not abort." Aren't miscarriages natural abortions?
