Dem surges in northern VA, Long Island: "Emerging Democratic Majority"?
Is the prediction of John B. Judis and Ruy Teixeira, in their 2002 book, starting to materialize?

This is from the back of the paperback version of the book:

"Political experts John B. Judis and Ruy Teixeira convincingly use hard data -- demographic, geographic, economic, and political -- to forecast the dawn of a new progressive era....

Judis and Teixeira show how the most dynamic and fastest-growing areas of the country are cultivating a new wave of Democratic voters who embrace what the authors call 'progressive centrism' and take umbrage at Republican demands to privatize social security, ban abortion, and cut back environmental regulations.

As the GOP continues to be dominatee by neoconservatives, the religious right, and corporate influence, this is an essential volume for all those discontented with their narrow agenda -- and a clarion call for a new political order."

1. Ah, as the world turns...
Bush's dreadful rural policies are driving young people into urban areas and the welcoming embrace of the Democratic Party. Ironic ain't it?

3. maybe, maybe not ...
we have to be careful interpreting the election results ...

a good model to keep in mind is the republican, on a bitter cold, temperature way below zero winter day, who says that this proves global warming is nonsense ... often times the megatrends cannot be legitimately inferred from the micro-data ...

the information we received from Tuesday's elections is fairly narrow ... a couple of governships, a handful of ballot questions in California, several other positive trends in isolated areas ...

i look at this, and next year's midterms, through the lens of whether the election results were "nationalized" or whether they were dependent on individual, local factors like the specific candidates running, the quality of their campaigns, and key local issues ...

Democrats would clearly like to know that the results were indicative of broad national trends ... in next year's midterms, their goal is clearly to nationalize the election ... with bush plummeting in the polls and virtually every policy he's tried to implement ending in disaster, Democrats will try to hang the "bush enabler" label around the neck of every republican running for office ...

but there is still the old adage "all politics is local" ... many races may come down to a "he raised taxes" or "she is too shrill" or whatever crap passes for political discourse ... maybe someone just gets in the best shot during a debate ...

trying to predict the mega-trends in the changing political climate from one day's weather is a most speculative business at best ...
