Kerry on the GOP Failure to Ram ANWR Drilling through House
John Kerry on the Republican Leadership’s Failure to Ram ANWR Drilling through House of Representatives
November 10th, 2005

Last night I reported that the House had dropped the provision from the Budget Bill to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. John Kerry has been a leader in the fight against drilling in the Arctic Refuge. He released the following statement this morning, regarding the failure of the GOP leadership to ram ANWR Drilling through the House :

“George Bush and the Republican leadership in Congress have failed to twist enough arms and intimidate enough moderate Republicans to sneak through Congress the alpha and omega of big oil giveaways - drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. It’s testimony to the President’s slumping political standing that he can no longer force the Republican Party to walk the plank in grudging support of a blatant special interest giveaway that vast majorities of Americans oppose.

8. what, i am dancing!!...:)
I'm from alaska, in sw missouri now, and i'm elated that the drilling was halted. I wrote our reps and Roy Blunt last week about this, but come to find out Roy Blunt is one of the "hound" dogs that want it to happen...but, at least he heard my 2 cents...:)

13. And you know what?
I don't really care all THAT much about that particular piece of Alaska. (don't flame me, I'm not being insensitive but I live in FL and I'm not a real outdoorsy type) But what thrills me is that these things CAN be stopped. It is possible! We can win environmental issues!

5. hearings on excessive oil company profits
i watched part of the Senate hearings yesterday on excessive oil company profits ... there were all kinds of questions about why, in times of such short supply, oil companies were still EXPORTING oil ... it was great watching the heads of BIG OIL squirming in their chairs ...

to be sure, bush's political weakness was clearly a component of the republican back-down on ANWR ... but the timing of record oil company profits and a public outraged over gas prices didn't hurt either ...

11. They haven't saved it yet.
The Rethugs will probably try and put it back in in conference and then fidn a way to do an end run around a vote for those Rethugs who are uncomfortable with it.
