Alexander Cockburn is an intellectual on par with Chomsky. This weekend his piece "First the Lying, Then the Pardons" -
http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn11112005.html - is the lead article for the weekend edition of CounterPunch.
Here Cockburn goes back to the Iran Contra affair investigated by special prosecutor Lawrence Walsh. His six year investigation ended when Bush Senior pardoned everybody on Christmas Eve of 1992. He is drawing parallels and intersections throughout the article to these pardons.
His advice to Fitzgerald heads the piece-
Fitzgerald Should Counter Any Pre-trial Talk of a Pardon for Libby with an Obstruction of Justice ChargeThe Nation says it will not support any candidate that is not for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq. Cockburn has a history with the Nation and in fact an earlier draft of this piece ran in the print edition of last Wednesday's edition.
I am a big fan of Alexander Cockburn, but I must admit that this work while being a good and fact-filled analysis does not do him justice when evaluating his style that makes him a great writer. It is still a great read, it just does not do much to reflect the glory he deserves for his style in writing.
