Who's the Girly-Man Now?
Who's the Girly-Man Now?

By Robert Scheer, AlterNet. Posted November 11, 2005.

The lessons of Tuesday's election is that Lincoln was right -- the American people will not forever be fooled.

You have to love California. Yes, I'm buzzed by the stunning rejection of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's referendum revolution aimed at turning this blue state red. That the voters soundly defeated his proposals to punish the public sector unions and legislators who dared to cross the Terminator is a bellwether moment for the nation.

Schwarzenegger was defeated primarily by the hardworking public sector workers of the state: the teachers, firefighters and other civil servants who are sick and tired of being pitted by politicians against those they are so dedicated to serving. "We're the mighty, mighty nurses" the joyous healers chanted in a victory conga line the night they brought the bully down.

Frankly, I feared that what was left of Schwarzenegger's blustery charisma along with the endorsement of some of his proposals by all of the state's big newspapers and the Republicans' attempt to drag their base to the polls with an anti-abortion initiative would fool the voters. That it didn't, along with the rejection of Bush backed candidates in New Jersey and Virginia, trumpets a message of hope for the country.

Hope, because California is not some bohemian outpost divorced from mainstream American reality, despite the incessant repetition of that caricature. After all, this is the state that gave the nation Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan and fell once again for the Republican big business populism of Schwarzenegger just two years ago.

2. Pleasing to see him take the LA Times to task. The LA Times just
discontinued him.

I love Robert Scheer. He was calling for bush to be IMPEACHED several years ago - when the only people who stood up for the truth were people like us here on DU.

5. Coming from a man who shaves his body and preens in mirrors...
...I never saw that as an insult.

I was very happy to see the Austrian Dictator go down.

6. When you bash your state's nurses, you're either one dumb MFer...
or you really don't care to serve in politics anymore. The only time most people encounter nurses is when they need and rely on them.

Since Arnie is a goddam egomaniac and had Presidential aspirations, my money is on the fact that he is just one dumb motherfucker.

7. Speaking DIRECTLY from the "Bohemian Outpost" of CA that you refer to...
that is SO stero-typical indeed. A stereo-type I admit I once had myself BEFORE I moved to CA many years back.

Los Angeles alone is made up of many communities and suburbs which are ALL demographics, and from ALL parts of the political spectrum. While the West Side and Entertainment community tends to lean more Blue, there are still MANY suburbs that are equally RED.

And I for one, as well as almost everyone I know, did NOT vote for Ahnaaaald; but are deeply embarrased by him, except as the "action figure' he was in his movie-making days. I did NOT make Ahnaaald the Gov...the Neo-con machine did with a specific goal of re-districting CA to make it Red, and also to "manage" Workers' Comp MONIES (perhaps like Ohio did???)

The only intelligent thing Ahnaaald said recently, was AFTER the special election, he said that he should've listened more to his wife, Maria. As cartoonish as Ahnaaald is, at least he's STARTING at least to admit when he makes a mistake. And is starting to give credit to a Woman's opinion.
