Local leaders unleash vitriol at O'Reilly- TV host should be fired

SAN FRANCISCO
Local leaders unleash vitriol at O'Reilly
TV host should be fired for comments about city, Daly says

Joe Garofoli, Chronicle Staff Writer

Saturday, November 12, 2005

Not everybody took Fox News host Bill O'Reilly's on-air comments this week about terrorists bombing Coit Tower as the hyperbole that fills the talk-radio ether. One of the ticked off was San Francisco Supervisor Chris Daly, who Friday called for O'Reilly to be fired.

<snip>

"Who is this guy, O'Reilly?" said Hanley, who identified himself as both a third-generation San Franciscan and military veteran. "I've got guys fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. I'm a veteran myself. What's he talking about?"

A spokesman for Westwood One, which carries O'Reilly's program in 400 markets, declined to comment Friday. Fox News could not be reached for comment.

<snip>

"Fine. You want to be your own country? Go right ahead," O'Reilly went on. "And if al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it. We're going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead."

Daly, who sponsored the handgun measure, could not dismiss the statements as hyperbole.

"When you have the privilege of being on the airwaves, there comes with that a certain amount of responsibility," Daly said. "If you want to disagree, fine, that's your right. But don't talk about blowing stuff up. There are people who live there and work there."

<snip>

O'Reilly made a statement similar to the one he made on the radio Tuesday: "Why should we protect you from al Qaeda and terrorists if you're going to disrespect the military by passing this, even though it's symbolic, resolution?"

"When he went off on this al Qaeda thing, I was thrown off. And I never get thrown off," Alioto said. "We're an American city, and you shouldn't be talking about that in relation to any city.

"But I don't think Bill O'Reilly should be fired for saying that," she said.

And while she doubts that he will apologize, she thinks that he may back off if he realizes that his comments are being interpreted as inciting terrorism. "And that's his big thing, terrorism," she said. "It would affect his credibility if he appeared to be advocating that."

1. Could this be the final straw for this hack?
I hope so!

4. We need to protest at their offices and disrupt their live crews
Edited on Sat Nov-12-05 06:46 PM by IanDB1
Back when they were airing "Doctor Laura," I suggested seeking-out their news vans and intentionally disrupting their live broadcasts in protest.

I was told that might be illegal.

Does anyone know if there are legal guidelines we could follow to do things like hold up signs and shout slogans during their live remote broadcasts?

They're usually pretty good about telling us where their news crews are going to be standing during the evening news.

All we would need to do is monitor their broadcasts and then post their locations (and anticipated locations) to message boards and SMS cellphone lists. Activists could then show-up to stand in front of the cameras waving signs and shouting something like, "Fire the Terrorist O'Reilly!"

We'd be setting-up sort of a nation-wide "flashmob" group. Call it a "Foxmob."

2. This is what happens when there
is no accountability. The right wing talk show hosts have had a free ride for over a decade. No sourcing, no fact checking, just blurt it out and its ok, was the standard. Guys like O'Rielly have come to believe that they could say anything and that it would never come back to bite them. He needs to be fired and banned from the airwaves. He is a menace. He is an irresponsible broadcaster and undeserving of the privilege of being on the radio or on t.v.

3. That's what pisses me off so much.
The right can badmouth anyone they want and get away with it, but liberals, and progressives can't.That's fucked up.

5. Damn right he should be fired.
Dan Rather was essentially fired for daring to challenge bush on his military service.

If a couple of these blowhards lost their jobs for spouting incendiary, hatelful commentary, they'd start to think twice before they opened their mouths.

6. What credibility?
This slimeball wouldn't know truth, integrity or defending his country if it was the only thing in front of him. When did this blowhard ever do anything to put his life on the line for the United States?

He is the farthest thing from a patriot. Boycott his sponsors, demand Fox be removed from your local cable network and file license complaints against any station carrying this traitor!
